Camden County College Literary Group Puts on Christmas Show

The Readers' Theatre Project will present "An American Christmas" Friday and Saturday.

The Readers’ Theatre Project at Camden County College will present a program of original adaptations of traditional holiday fare during three performances Friday and Saturday.

"An American Christmas" is adapted and directed by Professor Allison Green, the Readers’ Theatre artistic director. The dramatic seasonal presentation will be a true family affair, including sing-alongs of time-honored tunes and a visit from Santa Claus himself.

Literature from Truman Capote, Francis S. Church, Clement Clark Moore, O.Henry, Del “Abe” Jones and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow will be featured. Songs will include favorites by Irving Berlin, Haven Gillespie and J. Fred Coots, Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, Hugh Martin and Ralph Blaine, and Mel Tormé and Felix Bernard.

The Readers’ Theatre Project aims to heighten audience experience of books, stories, diaries, letters and other written material that wasn’t originally penned to be performed but does inspire oral adaptation, according to a press release from the college.

The readers, who are drawn from the college’s faculty and student body, as well as the community at large, deliver the text from script directly to the audience.

Simple props, sets and costuming combine with dramatic lighting and vocalization for a visually spare but emotionally rich presentation.

Admission is a suggested donation of $15 in general or $10 for students and senior citizens. Children under 12 will be admitted free.
