Christie to Run for Second Term as NJ Governor

Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey governor, he announced Monday.

Gov. Chris Christie will run for re-election for New Jersey governor's seat, he confirmed Monday.

Christie made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Department in Middletown Monday afternoon. The governor declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January.

But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children during the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing.

"I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie, adding that he loves the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done."

The gubernatorial election will take place in November 2013. Christie didn't indicate whether Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno will be his running mate again.

Christie is riding a ratings high following his response to Superstorm Sandy and the devastation it caused. He also dipped his toe into the national political scene this past presidential election with rampant speculation on his chances of a vice presidential nod until Mitt Romney selected Paul Ryan as his running mate.

Christie, a Republican, won the governor's seat in 2009, handily beating incumbent Jon Corzine.

New Jersey governors serve four-year terms. There are no term limits for governors, but governors cannot serve more than two consecutive terms.

Chris Christie understands the meaning of "just do it.". He's had a very challenging run as Governor of this state and he proven himself to be a reliable and competent leader. I would definitely vote for him.

Your man loss Frankie! Get over it.

Maybe that "loser" will offer the Attorney General of the USA position to Gov. Christie if Holder does not return for the 2nd term, (as may still be the case). That would be a tough decision for Christie to make, but maybe the same one he would have had to make had Romney pulled off a miracle. Ah, the temptation - run for president in 2016 from a national exposure springboard provided to Chris by his new BFF Barack!

LOL at you It's Your Conscious Calling! I'm a Democrat and I'll also say you must be joking. There's no way that the Democrat nominee, no matter who it is, will beat Chris Chrissie even if his approval rating were to slide down to around the 50% level before election day Nov 5, 2013. Chrissie is an incumbent governor running for reelection. While not all the time in NJ, most times an incumbent is reelected or the same party has the governorship for 2 terms, as in Gov. Jim McGreevey, to Richard Codey as Acting Governor and then Gov. Jon Corzine. Although Gov. Corzine was defeated in his bid for reelection, the Democrats held the office for 2 terms.

Cory Booker is in his 2nd term as Mayor of Newark. Unless there has been a change and a term limit set for that position, he can run again. The previous mayor was in office for 20 years. I think Booker's best bet is to wait until 2017, continue to build his name recognition (yes, Peeches he is pretty well known already in the state, especially in North Jersey), and to avoid any possible sandal.

Any prominent Democrat would be somewhat foolish to run against Christie in the upcoming election unless he/she raises a lot of money to finance a losing 2013 bid, but having effort money left to jump start a bid in 2017. In other words, 2013 would just be practice, but that cost a lot of campaign funds.

Surprising the people who defend Obama until the very end are the same ones who criticize Christie at the first opportunity.

I don't see how anyone has criticized Gov Christie in any of the comments posted thus far. I'm not sure what luis cabrera meant in the first post here (maybe given the past talk of Christie running for president he feels the only thing Christie could get elected to is governor). However, that is not criticizing Christie. Nor, is It's Your Conscious Calling's post that, "He (Christie) will never beat Cory Booker if he decides to run." Paul B's post is an obvious tongue in cheek joke.

So, who has criticized Christie thus far and further based that criticism on defending "Obama until the very end?!?" I'm the only one who even referenced Gov. Christie and Pres. Obama in a post! Schu, if in any way your reading comprehension told you (and I'm not saying it did), that my post was a criticism of Gov. Christie, then your schooling starting back to kindergarten has failed you.

All that said, why do you apparently feel that no one has the right to criticize Gov. Christie and support Pres. Obama "until the very end" at the same time?!? USA citizens have a right to criticize another at any time as long as it's not in a liberalness, slenderness or malicious manner, as established by the law for the status person being criticize.

As a public employee, and a union member. I am supposed to hate Christie, but I absolutely respect him. He has made tough choices and stuck to his guns. Although sometimes his demeanor or arrogance rubs me the wrong way, I think he has had some tough decisions to make, and I respect him for making them. He has my support.

He's got my vote! He was left a mess....did his best to clean it up and saved the pension programs long term. If he didn't make the cuts he did....those whom taught our children and those whom served to protect and serve us would have ended up with nothing in 10 years. He's done right by NJ and I applaud him. No political agenda....just the right guy for our state!

Well said, Debbie and Dean. You summed up the entire issue much better than I did. NJ has its own unique set of problems, and now its share of hurricane damage to add to the list. Christie was a model of what a governor should be. No hesitation; no waiting; no waffling. He knew what to do and he did it. Compare this with how Louisiana handled Hurricane Katrina. In the face of diasaster, Gov Christie showed the people of NJ and the entire country how its done.

This is your model for what you think should be President of the United States, what a joke. I think you also fail to realize how heavily Democratic this state is and he also failed to carry NJ for Romney who he was supposed to be supporting, but with support like that I bet Mitt wishes he had not used him.

Well Frank it appears that NJ and most of the country don't agree with you. Being a jerk is not showing backbone. Doing the right thing and treating people the way you want to be treated would be a good start for this Gov. As well as realizing you have to compromise some times to get things done. You don't always have to get your way to accomplish great things. The best politicians have always been able to reach across the aisle and work with each other. He does not understand the art of compromise and therefore is less effective. If at my job, and I'm in the public service treated people the way that Gov. Christie does I would probably be terminated and rightfully so. So why do we give him a pass? He's supposed to be a professional.....So act like one! He has let his, "New Jersey tough guy persona." Go to his head and I think now he thinks that we expect him to act that way. He also wants to destroy all unions, but how long before the workplace injustices that brought about unions in the first place come back Into the job if there's no one to look out for the little guy. Tax savings what a joke. What has he saved me nothing. My town lost one third of their police force one half of their municipal workers and one half other Twp. workers and I'm still paying the same amount of taxes. He saved me nothing and all it did was cost us services.

most of the country doesn't agree with him? How so?

Union members in NJ are the little guy? The average pay package for township employees is $100k. That makes you part of the top 30%!

Your town lost 1/3 of the police - what town? And how the heck were you affording them before hand if your taxes stayed the same but you had to fire people?

Its not my job to pay taxes for your town's police is it?

Are you essentially saying you would pay more taxes to have more police in your town? If so, find some candidates who will run on that platform and you're all set. As for the rest of us, I have had enough of tax increases for someone else's benefits.

Ask yourself this, if your taxes are the same and you have less staff, where did all the money go?

LOL Maryann, not at you in agreeing with Frank S, but in your throwing the term nom de' plume into this mix.

However, as to people not using their real first and last names here (and other online sites, too), there are many reasons for doing so. Among the biggest are privacy and personal/family security concerns. Using your full name on Internet sites allows anyone to do some relatively easy internet research to find your address, phone number, etc.

Not everyone using a nickname, handle, etc., is doing so to hide behind their PC just to fling insults at people or to troll and post things just to get kicks to how others respond. Their opinions, constructive criticism, etc., are just as important to read and consider as those that use their real names Of course, reading what someone else says doesn't mean you have to agree with them.

Norcross will see that he gets in buy using the fraudulent election boards, paying off people and in return, money and contracts, especially the money coming in from Sandy.

U.S. Attorney for New Jersey admitted, after widespread reports in the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Newark Star Ledger in 2003, that he had a private lunch with George Norcross in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2003. The lunch occurred while Mr. Christie was said to be exploring a run for Governor of the State; Mr. Norcross himself has bragged in conversations recorded on tape by the New Jersey Attorney General’s office, that his support is critical for anyone seeking statewide office in New Jersey. Furthermore, in 2003, companies affiliated with George Norcross were under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the FBI.

But I have no desire to live there in the winter (From September 30th to April 30th) Good luck to you! You will not need your ice cube maker but you know that!

Rick, as you have no doubt noticed, we've had some pretty cold weather in N.J. this year.............I know, the winter is longer and it 'can' get much colder but we will be prepared. We're looking forward to the clean, fresh air and the quieter living. The traffic here in N.J. is terrible and it seems no matter what time of day your are out. ALSO, my son, who is 'assigned' to be our 'caretaker' when we grow older, lives there. hahahahahaha...we are in our early 80's and have had health problems. In Augusta, Maine the services for seniors is great....a small city but with plenty of things to do and enjoy. It's a big step and means not seeing our daughter in Pa. as often but she also loves Maine and they may just settle there upon retirement. We camped there many times over the years and love it. Thanks for your interest.
