Council to Move Forward with Rec Center Expansion

Expansion means more room for preschool and meetings, but the plan isn't a done deal yet.

Gloucester Township Council is one step closer to approving an expansion to the recreation center on Broadacres Drive in Blackwood.

A resolution to approve the proposed expansion plans as well the advertisement for bids on the project will be on the agenda at the Feb. 11 Council meeting.

Business administrator Tom Cardis discussed the basic of the proposal with Council at Monday night's workshop session. The expansion will add two rooms that will take up a combined 1,600 square feet, Cardis said. Both rooms will be for mutil-purpose use and will serve as meeting areas and well as an area for the township's preschool program.

Cardis said that the preschool program has done well in the past few years and the expansion will give the program more space. The expansion is a part of the Township's Recreation Open Space program.

The expansion will be paid for by a bond ordinance that was approved by Council in May 2012. The $920,000 bond ordinance set aside $287,100 to pay for the Recreation Center expansion. The remainder of the money in the ordinance was slated to be used toward improvements at the Blackwood Kiwanis Little League complex.

Do you think the recreation center should be expanded? Tell us in the comments.

Must be time for someone to run for reelection in Gloucester Township. Little league fields being repaired, rec centers being expanded, battle tanks purchased and all done in the name of the people with borrowed money that will someday need to be paid back. Bond ordinance is political speak for credit card. That's right the town borrowed this million dollars, is paying interest on it and using it for political gain. And we get to foot the bill. Thanks for the zero tax increase, that was not too difficult considering you put the towns bills on credit. What happens when those bill come due?

Wake up and start questioning the people running things. We will help you get started. Did the FBI raid the township offices and seize records? Have donors to the ruling party in town been investigated by the FBI? Have donors to the ruling party in town been indicted for fraud and government corruption? Has a ruling party boss had his business raided and computers and files seized by the FBI? Ask these and many more questions and the answers will shock you. We are legion. We are watching. We are here.

Seems like you and Mel have some kind of imagined insider information about the FB I and all your conspiracy theories. Well, have fun with that because you may be right , but you may have the wrong people who are being watched. Did you ever think it may be you and your Croney radical friends?
Guess not since you are such amateur bloggers and can't think of anything but lies and how to try to destroy a beautiful town and the people in it.
Well, let me lower myself to your level for a minute and give you back some of your own words. We are also watching, we are here, and you are slanderous.
So I guess if the FBI is investigating you and it's posted on Patch, we hope that they get a picture of you peeing your pants as they cuff you and haul your butts away.
Be careful Darren with association with these clowns, they are using you, laughing at you and would throw you under the bus if anything goes down. You know who they are, and how they treat you, think it out, We both know some of them don't even live in Twp. they go around the State and try to destroy towns, what in the name of Democracy? Sickening but Laughable. I hear the Republicans don't really want anything to do with them because they are so radical , have one agenda. and couldn't give a rats butt about you or our town.
Trying to destroy a foundation named for a precious little life who has passed away.
No words for that one except, God doesn't like nasty, especially when it's put on his Little Angels.

"Council to move forward" = Done deal

"A resolution... will be on the agenda at the Feb. 11 Council meeting" = Unanimous 'yes' vote.

I am saddened that my faith in our government has eroded to where, when reading about a project like this, the first things that come to mind are "Whose pockets are being lined?" "Whose favor is being returned?" "Whose political agenda is being advanced?"

I am thankful for the Patch. I have learned so much of what is really going on in Gloucester Township on this site. Why don't local papers like the Courier cover any of this. We live in one of the largest townships in this area and there is no coverage of anything that is going on! Thank you Patch for keeping us informed!

Maybe the Courier Post isn't interested in baseless accusations that are on Patch.
I have to say it takes allot to strike a nerve with me and congratulations to all of the bloggers who commented on this article.
Especially you Darren. Haven't you been commenting on how the kids need a place to play, I believe your comments were they should build a fun center.
Well, it seems to me that the Rec. Center has been such a great success and #'s of kids utilizing it warrants a expansion . A logical mind would consider this a good thing. The more kids in the center with structured activities, means there are less bored on the streets getting into trouble. .
The comments that have been posted by Anonymous, Head ,GT Watchdog and mostly YOU, Mel are reprehensible, false and slanderous. You have gone way under the gutter where I believe you were spawned.
How does "The Tyler Cardis Foundation" have anything to do with the Rec. Center?
You obviously don't have a clue about the foundation, or really anything else that goes on in the Twp. You just see a name, don't like the person, so you want to come on here and start bludgeoning Tom and the foundation in his son's name.
Do you have a clue what this great foundation does for families obviously no,do you care, obviously not.
You have really crossed the line in the name of Politics and you have zero boundaries, unlike you, even rabid, feral animals have boundaries.
So you should go back into the dark, lifeless sewer you live in.

Susan Greene, Darren "Vote I Don't" Gladden just called you out on your voting record, that’s a classic. guy votes in 2 elections out of the 42 elections in Gloucester township in the last 10 years and he all the sudden wants to call others out on their voting record...that’s classic. Keep up the good posts Susan the people of Gloucester Township deserve the truth. Oh and Darren before you try and talk about if there were 42 elections in GT over the last 10 years, THERE WERE actually 46 you just because you failed to vote in over 40 of them does not mean they did not happen.

It seems to me that the money to purchase the "tank" could have been used to pay for the expansion of Rec Center without incurring more debt. If Council knew they had money left over from 2007 for capital why didn't they make the bond offering $250,000 less? I do not know what is worse, these idiots keep getting re-elected or the fraud that these transactions point to goes undetected. I've know a few people who have used the below link to see if the citizens of Gloucester Township can get any help.

Remember Sick of GTBS, the bond attorneys and bondsmen that finance the "Mayor Council School board Team" need to recoup their investments. Once you view Councils and the school boards actions through that lens things make sense.

In an election year they get to claim zero tax increase this year by bonding everything they can. anon had it right when he called it the municipal credit card. Responsible people pay it off every month. David Meyer and Tom Cardis max it out so if a responsible person beats them in November they can blame the next guy for cleaning up their fiscal mess.

Speaking of Tom Cardis, has anyone looked into the finances surrounding a certain scholarship fund he runs? Chatter around the municipal water cooler is they bring in a lot more than they give out and local businesses have been "strongly advised" to donate to this. The exact quote being passed around is "if you do not donate you will never do business in Gloucester Township again".

This may be just rumor but it does paint their business policies and spending sprees in a different light, now doesn't it?

My family is from this town and we will continue to live in this town . I believe we live in a great community that attempts to enhance the quality of life. Politicians are always going to make decisions that most people like and dislike, but thats part of their job. The town wants to improve a Rec center where children in the community have fun at? I am all for it because its for the kids!

A lot of our surrounding towns have many more issues then we do, and there are no attempts being made to fix them. I may be the only one on here to say this but I think our town is doing a great job.

Well, to begin with I did not vote for the current administration running our township. I think that another two rooms on an existing structure is wasteful and redundant. Why doesn't the township use one of the plethora of empty rental spaces on Blackwood-Clementon Road? It's not far from the Rec. Center and I bet it would be a lot cheaper. It is almost election time again and sad to say, the people will probably vote for Santa Claus again, even if it puts our township further into debt. Where is the responsible action being taken there? How does this spending help to secure our township? Has anyone noticed that crime is up in a big way? Beuler...Beuler...Beuler....

They spent all of funds that WE OVERPAID on their "spending spree", then called a zero increase. That is absurd. Now they are maxing out the credit cards. What does that do for the children? their future?
Awards at council meetings, balls fields that already have plenty upgraded, $800,000 hockey rinks that actually cost closer to $3 Million.
If you want to think about the children.....think about what credit card bills (bonds) the Township Politicians racked up, and think about those same children paying for them, along with their high property taxes. We LIVE for our children today. We PLAN and look out for THEIR FUTURE.

i dont see the original comment that i read the other day regarding accusations of misuse by the "business administrator's foundation"- maybe someone got smart and took it down. I wanted to comment then but didn't have a chance.
I have seen a lot of low on here, but that might take the prize.
I don't necessarily approve of the expenditures that are currently being voted on by council, but to accuse someone of misusing funds from a foundation set up in the name of their dead 4 year old son is just sickening.

Angie Jones,it's still there, posted by a radical named Mel. Just above Eagles Fan 856 and below Sick of GTBS. Yes Angie, There is a few radicals who are residents of GT and a couple of out of towners who come to our Council Meetings and attack each council person , one by one. Now they are on personal attacks.
They sit at meetings , laughing, and mocking the process. Just like a bunch of school yard bulliew.
I;m all for people coming and asking questions, presentiong ideas and stating their concerns to our leadership.
But this is insane, I wish more people would come to council or watch online and see how they behave. They are just waiting for someone to know the chip off their shoulders. How miserable they must be in their own personal life to act like that It's disgusting and they want to call themselves Politicians.
They remind me of the radical group during the early stages of the war in Iraq, remember the group that would go to Military Funerals and disrupt a poor parent trying to bury their loved one Yep, that's who they remind me of Oh, but then they scream and yell it's their right to protest.
Now, here on Patch, this group of bullies attack every news post of the Twp. slamming away on the keyboard about FBI, conspiracy theories, and now the beautiful foundation in memory of a little boy.
Read Darren's reply to me, I just tried to warn him off this group, they just use him but he wants to come back and attack me. Bullies don't scare me, they give me strength.

NA..I don't care about Darren calling me out. I was voting when he was a Twinkle in his Pappy's eye.
I guess it's getting to him, he keeps telling us he woke up, we should wake up, have to laugh, is he Cindr-fella? I just tried to give him heads up about how they are using him and laugh at him doing their dirty work. I kind of felt bad for the guy seeing and hearing what his so called friends are doing to him
He say's in his post he's loud and proud, really? Proud of his actions? Say's I should listen to him, of course ,he's right and everyone else is wrong.
Maybe Darren should try to read the newspaper, not "PAPPER", and really know what's going on, residents of GT all know they can get the answers to the questions they have. I just wish that some of the residents that used to come to council and ask questions would come back. I know a few elderly folks that don't come anymore because they don't want to be disrespected by the bullies, and they can't stand the hatefulness directed to our leadership, that kind of bully crap scares them. So, anyway, Darren is loud and proud, of scarring off people from coming to council? They are Americans also, but I guess they don't have the same rights as bullies.
I don't hear Darren standing up against Mel for his disgusting comments about the Tyler Cardis Foundation. I guess he agrees with him HUH? Darn shame and bad Karma. Did you notice Mel's comment at the end? This just may be a rumor? What a Lousy Political Blogger.
