Former Triton Principal, Teachers Collected $95K+ While Suspended

Black Horse Pike Regional School District reports former principal Catherine DePaul was paid more than $50,000 during her suspension.

Three former Triton Regional High School educators received paychecks totaling nearly $100,000 while they were suspended as a result of a teacher-student sex case that rocked the school last fall.

Former principal Catherine DePaul and former teachers Jeffrey P. Logandro and Daniel R. Michielli stopped receiving paychecks when they forfeited their positions at the Runnemede school with guilty pleas entered earlier this month. None can ever hold public office in New Jersey again under the plea deals.

According to figures provided to Patch by Black Horse Pike Regional School District (BHPRSD) this week as part of a broader Open Public Records Act filing, the district paid DePaul $50,600.56, Logandro $23,753.66 and Michielli $21,427.32 over the course of their suspensions.

Criminal cases are still pending against former Triton vice principal Jernee Kollock, who was transferred to Timber Creek High School last summer, and teacher Nicholas Martinelli.

Both Kollock and Martinelli continue to draw paychecks from the district while they are suspended.

The district has no legal recourse to recoup money it paid the three educators while they were suspended, BHPRSD Superintendent John Golden said on Wednesday.

Logandro and Michielli pleaded guilty to one count of third-degree conspiracy to commit official misconduct on Feb. 11. They'll be sentenced March 15 and both face a 30-day sentence served in county jail, at home or through another jail program.

DePaul was immediately sentenced to one year of probation after entering her guilty plea Feb. 11 to one count of a disorderly persons offense for failure to report to law enforcement allegations of child abuse or neglect.

The alleged sexual relationships between Triton teachers and students took place between November 2011 and June 2012, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

Logandro and Michielli's victims were 17 years old at the time of their relationships with the girls. Both men originally were charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and official misconduct and fourth-degree criminal sexual contact.

Michielli faced an additional count of second-degree sexual assault.

Martinelli is charged only with second-degree official misconduct, and no sex-specific offenses, as his alleged victim was 18 years old at the time of the accused improper sexual relationship.

Both DePaul and Kollock were charged in October with second-degree official misconduct, as well as a disorderly persons offense, for failing to report the teachers' misconduct when it was brought to their attention last spring.

Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk indicated his office was prepared to take the cases against Kollock and Martinelli to a grand jury following the Feb. 11 plea hearings if pre-trial deals could not be reached.

NEW JERSEY WORLD'S MOST CORRUPT & RACIST STATE
Written by Dave Makkar

New Jersey WORLD'S most corrupt & racist state with largest per capita deficit, most elected representatives, employees & attorneys per sq mile in the world.
Majority of us think India is very corrupt democracy but that's not the case. You may be right that there is too much corruption in India still all the states in India are less corrupt than the state of New Jersey (NJ) in America. Most disgusting is NJ is legally corrupt and legally racially segregated under Unionized Rulers posing as Politicians, Bureaucrats, Judges, Law Enforcement, Religious, Media and Business Leaders. They call NJ style governance Home Rule which in my opinion is nothing but a Gang Rule for An Employment Scheme for the Unionized Gang Members, their friends and Relatives. In Indian context it can be called Netaji Rojgar Yojna or Employment Scheme for Politicians. 8,721 sq miles New Jersey for 8.5 mil residents is the worst example of racial segregation, moral and ethical corruption with over 9,000 Elected officials & 466,000 state/local employees. 32% of the population lives in 29 colored Towns and rest 68% lives in 537 white Towns. Yet no one mention the word "Race" in this state. NJ is a very small state, yet it is overpopulated not with people, but with government in fact with governments. It has 25 times more Municipalities, School Boards and personals. Then it has 20 times more Elected officials.

To review, DePaul was paid $ 50,000 to sit at home, collect a taxpayer funded paycheck and be sentenced to one year probation. Let's not forget the taxpayer funded pension she'll earn for the rest of her life. We have a great system in NJ.

This figure is really ~$150,000 or so (and counting) for the 5 suspended educators.

That's true. Our $95K+ figure only represents the total payout during suspensions to the three former Triton educators—no longer district employees and, thus, no longer being paid as a result of their having entered guilty pleas Feb. 11. It is safe to assume the two educators with cases still pending have pulled in a total of about $50,000 to $60,000 since they were suspended.

This isnot the fault of the BOE. State law mandates that these people be paid until they have had their day in court. During her probation, the BOE should act to fire her, and to attack her pension(at least that part NOT earned while on suspension).

Let's clarify something--EVERYONE--teacher pensions are taken( 7.5%) out of their paychecks, then a portion is matched by their employers. Many companies also give matching contributions to their employees' 401K and retirement funds, so why are people continuing to say "tax payer funded pensions"... teachers are also local & state tax payers contributing as much to their own pensions as many people in other jobs contribute or more...seems a double set of standards...in regards to their personal conduct AND to the penalties attached. If a "businessman" (not a teacher) had done the same incredibly stupid thing, would there be the same penalty-- since the age on "consent" in NJ is 16??? ....perhaps they would be given a divorce by their wife, but that is probably the only way their 401K could be taken away...unless, of course -- they are teachers, right guys???

Pensions are a thing of the past Julia. Except in our schools districts and goverment. My company cut out the 401K match in 2009-2010. Could that happen in a school district? Of course not. So while I took a hit in a difficult economic time for our country the teachers kept adding to their pension. We can argue that the private sector is wrong but please don't think they are comparable in any way whatsoever.

I have serious concerns with the local school boards but in this case their hands were tied. The law is they have to pay until their are indicted or plea. Everyone just calm down. Blame the board all you want for the culture that allowed the molestation to happen, but not the state rules that continued to pay the former teachers and administrators.

If you are this concerned about it, contact the 4th district legislative office.

Let's not forget they still had their health benifits which additionaly costs somewhere upwards of 35% of their pay.

How about we also not forget the SUPERINTENDENT JOHN GOLDEN who KNEW about the sex scandal when it first occurred did nothing was never charged and still has HIS position collecting a nice fat salary... Taxpayers should be outraged about that!

Sean McCullen if your gonna report the story you and your paper need some better investigative skills... Tell the whole story. Tell about the teachers that sat on evidence of this scandal for months and were never charged, report about the Superintendent who left the Principal out to dry by not giving her proper directives... Why wasn't he charged? Why don't you report that instead of talkin about how much these people were paid? How about the prosecutor and his misconduct for not charging certain people in the case who were just as guilty for not reporting what they knew to the police?

And for all of those making such presumptuous accusations CATHERINE DEPAUL followed protocol and informed her boss of the accusations and was still charged the justice system is a joke and the prosecutors office is incompetent

Stanley: Thanks for your suggestions. Perhaps you want to go to another media outlet that has been more thorough in its coverage of the Triton sex scandal than Patch.

FACT: Catherine DePaul pleaded guilty. These are no longer accusations against her. As far as the criminal justice system is concerned, it is a fact she did not do as she was required by law.

If you have more than speculation that others knew about the teacher-student relationship-- some form of hard evidence-- and failed to pass it along as Ms. DePaul has confessed, pass it along to me. Or better yet, pass it on to the authorities.

Until then, I'll continue to go by the words of the man whose office investigated this matter for months and months and months over speculation by an anonymous commenter who goes by "Stanley Holmes:"

"We are satisfied that this is the totality, the universe of the offenses at Triton High School." - Camden County Prosecutor Warren Faulk

Good comments, good questions, Stanley.
I agree that many other officials and educators likely broke the same law that Ms. DePaul did.

Ms Paul could have gone to the police and Golden is no better than the men who ran PSU. If you had knowledge of kids being hurt than you need to get something done to make it stop. I would Golden if he indeed knew of this also brought on charges .

Via email, I asked the County prosecutor's office whether any others are being investigated. The reply that I received was: "No, our investigation has left us confident in saying that the criminal misconduct was limited to those charged."

Mr. McCullen I do not indulge in speculation or hear say sir as the matter in question and all the aforementioned is now public record and can be and should be looked into with scrutiny by someone who should be interested in telling the WHOLE story as for the man' s office who investigated the matter take a look at the initial press conference of the Camden county prosecutor after the teachers were charged it resembles an SNL skit

I'm confident I've done my job informing the public of the story that needed to be told as it relates to the Triton case. Again, if you have specific information that there were other educators involved in the shameful teacher-student sex scandal at Triton, you would be doing society a favor to pass that information along, as opposed to merely going on a news site to claim, as you seem to be doing, that you possess such information. Share that information! Here's my email address: sean.mccullen@patch.com
