Mayor Hosts Town Hall by Phone Tonight
Gloucester Township Mayor David Mayer pitches the call-in session as an opportunity "to receive input from our citizens about how we can improve the quality of life in our community."
Gloucester Township Democrats released the following press release:
Gloucester Township Mayor Dave Mayer will host an hour-long Telephone Town Hall Meeting from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27. Residents are encouraged to call toll free (888) 409-5380 from their home or cell phone to participate in a live question-and-answer session with Mayer.
“The goal of this live Telephone Town Hall Meeting is to encourage participation in township government and to receive input from our citizens about how we can improve the quality of life in our community,” said Mayer. “This will be an interactive opportunity for residents to share their vision of the township’s future and discuss how we can work together for a better Gloucester Township.”
The live Telephone Town Hall Meeting is open to all residents of Gloucester Township. Residents will receive a phone call prior to the start of the meeting. Those residents that are available and want to participate can stay on the line to share their ideas with Mayer. A recorded message with directions to join the call will be left for residents that do not answer. Residents who do not receive a phone call can also call the toll-free number, (888) 409-5380, from their home or cell phone to participate.
To listen live during the Telephone Town Hall Meeting, visit www.voteteammayer.com. An audio recording of the town hall meeting will be available after the event at the website.

Pete: The press release I posted above nearly verbatim, with minor style and grammar edits, was put out on behalf of Gloucester Township Democrats, as noted. The agency that got the press release to us, and other media outlets, was Strategic Message Design Group Inc., which is based in West Deptford and does work for GT Democrats.
Before someone asks: Yes, when GT Republicans nominate a candidate to challenge Dave Mayer in this year's mayoral election, we will gladly include the website address for his or her campaign in any press releases we pass along to the community in this manner. You have my word, and, more importantly, the word of my bosses who will be overseeing my soon-to-be announced successor.

If it is paid for by the GT Democrats and the link is to the Mayor's re-election website then it is a campaign event.
Let me say this for the record. I have no problem with Candidate Mayer hosting a campaign "town hall" to better understand what people want to see out of him in his second term. In fact I think it is a wonderful idea because it separates his role as sitting Mayor from that as someone campaigning. Assuming the Mayor plans to actually listen to people and embrace their complaints this is an innovative idea. Note again I am not placing any judgments on if he is sincere or not so please do not use my compliment of this idea as a platform to bash the Mayor.
My problem with this event is that it is advertised and discussed in the paper as a municipal town hall. The data collected from the residents might be the same but there is a difference between doing this as the government and using it as a campaign event. If he wants to call it a "town hall" then in my opinion it should be purely municipal in its focus and not be a campaign event.
Just my opinion. Like the concept but completly disagree with it being billed as a municipal event.

Stache's Minion can you point out where in Sean's article it says the mayor was holding a "municipal town hall meeting" as you stated? I believe you are making things up and it is this type of hatred and misinformation that gets people all pumped up on here to go off the deep end with misinformation. AS a matter of record can you tell us all how many times the word municipal is used in the entire article? I say the number is 0. Actually can you tell us if any derivative of the word municipal was used I would be willing to say 0x would you like to prove me wrong?

Thank you for you thoughtful reply. I had stated advertised and discussed in the paper. I did not say Patch. Here is the link
http://www.philly.com/philly/news/new_jersey/20130227_Gloucester_Township_to_hold__telephone_town_hall_.html
The Inquirer headline is "Gloucester Township to hold 'telephone town hall'". This to most people reads like an official town hall.
I also asked people to not bash the Mayor. There was no misinformation get people pumped up but my opinion on my Mayor sending out press releases leading the media covering this as if it were an official GT event. I was not attacking you.
I am not here to attack the Mayor. I like the idea of a teleconference campaign event to communicate to people and get feedback. I just don't like it being advertised as a GT event. When the Mayor does something I disagree with, I have a right to speak my mind about it.
Is this how his "team" reacts to criticism?

OK Stache's Minion you seem to be 0 for 2 now because again just like the first article the word municipal was not used....I would normally say good try but that one was even more lame then your first attempt to discredit this mayor.
Great Job Mayor Mayer just like the article in today's paper says your Town Hall meeting that cost the tax payers nothing and was billed as "A ringing success" congratulations Mayor Mayer on a job well done.

I was smart enough to read the first line. It became deceiving when it referenced Mayor and Town Hall Meeting. Those words together, say to me that it is official business of my Township.
I was confused by the wording and honestly didn't believe that this was anything but official town business and the usual posters on here, from opposing sides were throwing accusations out there, as they often do.
I was truly surprised to find out that it was a campaign event.

I just wonder did you condemn Assemblyman Dominic Dicicco when he used our court room for his town hall meeting that had nothing to do with our town and actually cost us money to allow him to use the room. Did it bother you when Governor Chris Christie came here and did the same self promoting propaganda in our senior building also costing us money to protect him too?? No I can't find one detrimental comment form you on either one of them, yet you seem to find a problem that the democrats are using there own phone lines in their own building to have a town hall meeting, gee can you get any more petty? Just like Dicicco and Christie used their titles as governor and Assemblyman the current Mayor can use his elected title it's called respect for the people who voted him into office.

I hae listened to the recording and need to correct my post above about shared disposal savings. The mayor said the projected savings from trash collection is 1.7 mil over 5 years. I mis-stated the number above. There was no savings projection provide for recycle, only tht we increased 40% and we make $$ selling some of the waste. win/win. How much? Don't know. We have saved about $70 thou on disposal costs. There, I have corrected myself.
Debbie Shinn
8:46 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2013
About the solar project. I believe the mayor accidentally mis-quoted the capacity when he said 6 megawatts. 2 of the largest sky-scrapers in the city don't require that much load. Having said that, the panels will provide energy that can be purchased at market rates unless we have contracted for a set price or a price set below market. The contractor will own all the energy put on the grid. This type of plan can work really well based on how the township contracted the buy back for the energy. I am confident they consulted an analyst who helped them with this project to ensure the returns they have been told to expect.
Debbie Shinn
9:04 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2013
I am not critizing the mayor in any way about the solar project. It's a wonderful endeavor and I commend his intensions. The deregulation of electric generation is a really new an evolving market. The product of electricity is now subject to the whims of the open market.

Was that murder last night because I believe there are several bars in this town that are open until 2 AM so do you have a police report showing some murder last night that went under the radar so far that no news agency in the nation picked up on it or are the police in this town covering it up in the all powerful operation to hide information from residents? Seriously your answer is bazar and unsubstantiated at best.
According to you we are supposed to believe that people that drink before 1 PM are going to kill people but only if they do it on Sundays? Really? If you want something to complain about please don't make things up. Yes we all remember the kid that got killed outside Chatterly's 11 or so years ago. That bar has been open under 2 other names since and both times until 2AM and no other murders happened their it was an unfortunate event not something that will happen because a bar opens before 1PM on Sundays. That said you still did not answer my questions. I will repost them since you seem to think starting a new thread will somehow help avoid them.

As far as your concern for people that live near the proposed site; nobody lives there it is a commercial area. So unless the people that live in the gas station or the rite aid or the Entemins factory are bothered by this bar replacing the last bar, there really is no problem. In fact you even complemented the Stone Grill which was a bar in the same location open until 2AM in fact they will be using the same liquor license to open this facility. Please think before you continue to spread false statements making people get worked into a hysteria for no reason at all.

Nothing I have said is false. People live behind the Stone Grill, the gas station and the Rite Aid. I am quite framiliar with the location. If the residents of the township want to approve off track betting in the township? I'm OK with it. It's the lack or absence of that consideration I have much trouble with. Funny it seems to be such a done deal already and I did not hear of it until tonight. Same thing with the purchase of the armored vehicle that was such a done deal before I ever heard of it. Many residents are probably in the same situation I am in, they just don't know.
Debbie Shinn
9:24 pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2013
Andrea: I have no problem with betting. I have a problem with a BAR open till 2am that provides off track betting to bring in an outside element that is not positive to our commerce just to get tax money. They get plenty of tax money right now!!! If the residents of the township want such a place? So be it, that's how we roll. But for him to make this decision over the heads of the residents is a really big deal. We approved gambling in AC as voters and again we had a say abut selling alchohol before 1pm on Sundays. This type of a decision is left to the residents and tax payers of the town, not an elected Mayor. He is only elected to run the business of the town, not run a kingdom. He has crossed the line with me.

"What do you think the punishment should be for an elected official that allowed betting that was not previously legal just because he was trying to rake in a few extra bucks to help with taxes in our towns?" Then, let me restate my issue regarding off track betting for the township. "The residents should be provided the opportunity to vote on the issue, up or down." Let me also restate your direct request from me. "Join me and Debbie Shinn and VOTE OUT Chris Christie for ignoring federal laws and allowing sports betting in New Jersey." The problem with your position on this issue Andre as well as your problem on this with me is that in 2011, the residents of the State overwhelmingly approved sports betting in New Jersey. Sorry buddy but the issue was presented as a ballot referrendum and was approved by the voters. Christy is attempting to close the loop on that approval. I have no opinion on the issue at this point, the residents have decided. That same consideration should be provided the residents of the township. I would be satisfied with the outcome knowing the public had a voice.

Words will not bully me or deter me from expressing my opinion just as you have the right to express your opinions.
That said can you please explain to all of us what you found so deceitful in the mayors call in town hall meeting? I know I found comments from you and people like you deceitful when you made claims that it was a "Municipal" town hall meeting when the words municipal were never once used in the article. It was words of your choosing that unsuccessfully tried to make it look as if the mayor was doing something deceitful by reaching out to his constituents and asking them what things they would like to see happen in the municipality. I understand why you are so fearful of reading my posts because people like you their biggest fears in life are truth. There once was a movie line that said "You can't handle the truth" your comments are a prime example of what he meant. Now I will take you on your word that you will not read my post which means you won't respond to it unless you are an admitted liar. So which one of your alter ego names will come out to defend you?

Today's Philly Inquirer said the "town hall" phone meeting was held and fielded questions. They also said that a recycling poll question resulted in only "one" very dissatisfied, which was number "5" on the dial.
Besides me, did anyone else push "5" for very dissatisfied? Let's see how accurate the poll article was.

Honestly, I can't be dissatisfied with recycling, it does save debris from landfills and it does save a municipality $$. Having said that, the Mayors #'s made no sense. He claimed he saved 1.7 million with shared picked-up and another $400 thou from recycling. That sounds good. He than suggested the recycling (combined items) program saved 61 metric tons from the landfill. I honestly forget the initial # he provided representing what our initial trash weight was, but I don't think it was well over 100 metric tons. If we are recycling close to or over 1/2 of out output, the saving should be more than $400 thou is our overall cost exceeded 1.7 mil to begin with. The math just did not work for me. However, I find most of the math coming from the Mayor and Council is questionable. Like his solar power generation figure of 6 Megawatts? Over what period, a decade?

GTW: I was on the call, and did not vote "5" for this poll question.
I understand that you are frustrated with GT government, and I realize that this town hall and the poll questions were slanted; but, are you really "very dissatisfied" with the recycling program, or were you just rigging the poll?

Paula DiBartolo (aka boring blogs). Gt really doesn't care what you have to say. Do you blame the Mayer for not calling you. The mayor would fall asleep after hearing you. Are you running for Mayor against the great Dave Mayer. Let us know?

How do you live with yourself? Take a poll and see how many people on here actually want to have to scroll through your constant regurgitation of the same old stuff. Whether your criticisms of me are founded in truth or not, you make me look like a genius. Why don't you take a pill and give it a rest?

Have a safe trip GJGT, when will you return? It's a shame you won't be here for the hearing on Wed., You know, the former councilwoman hearing. I know everyone is waiting to see if the comments will be reviewed and sequestered again by Patch Staff. Maybe not, because all the personal attacks on the Mayor just this week obviously haven't been reviewed and removed. I hope that they" Patch" are not holding a "former Councilwoman " in higher regard than a seated Mayor like they have been doing in the past. Maybe the new Editor in Chief will be more balanced on Patch policy. Hurry back , I can't believe you are going to leave me alone with all of the "I hate everything they post about Township" bloggers. I'm so scared, they may pick on me for Loving G.T. with my positive outlook on the progress here in the. past 3 years.. LOL, SMH, just smile, I .do...

When I read all of the comments, I become very discouraged about our society. It seems no one has the maturity or the decency to allow another to express their views without hate mongering or giving the person a degrading insult. Everyone, when you express your opinion and then bash or make negative, insulting, immature or hateful remarks you completely discredit yourselves. You sound ignorant and it is a huge red flag not to consider anything you say as anywhere near having a shread of credibility or accuracy. It is tiring reading all of these negative comments and it interferes with a good, clean debate and exchange of information.
