Off-Track Betting Coming to Gloucester Twp.?
The OTB facility is slated for the former Stone Grille site, but must be approved first.
A North American gaming company has set its sights on Gloucester Township as the future home of New Jersey's fifth off-track betting (OTB) facility.
Penn National Gaming Inc. has already entered into a lease agreement with the owners of the former Stone Grille, located at 1300 Blackwood Clementon Road, Gloucester Township Business Administrator Tom Cardis said Wednesday evening.
"It looks like they're very serious about coming here," Cardis said. "We welcome them."
The Wyomissing, PA-based company would like to open Favorites—a facility for wagering on horse racing, with a restaurant and bar—in Gloucester Township by this summer, but must first receive a series of local and state approvals, according to NJBiz.com, which broke the story Wednesday afternoon.
Stone Grille has been closed for several months now.
Cardis sees the Favorites at Gloucester Township OTB facility as one that will bring jobs to the township and customers to other businesses along Blackwood Clementon Road, including nearby restaurants Filomena and Cotardo's.
"It's a great opportunity for economic development," he said.
Penn National Gaming would open the Blackwood Clementon Road OTB facility with one of four OTB licenses granted to Freehold Raceway, on which it's a joint venture partner.
Penn National Gaming operates 29 gaming facilities in the United States and Canada, including Favorites at Toms River—the first OTB facility opened using a Freehold Raceway OTB licenses, according to the NJBiz.com report.
The closest Favorites to Gloucester Township is located on Delsea Drive in Vineland. The facility, which opened in March 2007, is operated by Greenwood Racing—which partnered with Penn National Gaming as Pennwood Racing to open Favorites at Toms River in 2008—and has roughly 50 employees.

There really isn't anything to do in GT. We let the arena pass us by. Most of the restaurants/bars are closed. There are no movies, bowling, or other fun places. And just look at all the revenue that would come in from unsuspecting out of towners running our yellow lights. Let something entertaining happen in GT.

Must be the reason GTPD needs an armored vehicle.

GTPD has been using Lindenwolds armored vehicle (far more often than you would care to know) and deserves their own...what's wrong, are you afraid of being protected or discovered?

Firstly, that is the County's vehicle, not Lindewold's.
Secondly, are you suggesting that GT and Lindenwold each would need their own vehicles?
Maybe Pine Hill also needs its own. How about Runnemede, too? Don't forget HiNella.

@faeshuck, I can protect myself and have nothing exciting to be discovered. It comes down to risk/reward. The "need" for an armored vehicle is questionable at best, specially considering theat the county's armored vehicle is sitting in GT over at Lakeland. This is nothing more than a reward for the chief so he can show off his new toy and try to make the other police chiefs envious. He's a clod who couldn't keep his own officers from being shot in his own police station. He claims procedures were followed. Maybe they were. If so, the procedures are flawed, and whose responsibility is that? The chief's. He should be fired, not just for being a political hack with his head up the Mayors back side, but for being incompetent as a police chief.

I am curious, can the township tax the gaming profits or is that only taxed by the state?

I hope so. I am sure the township will benefit somehow from taxes. Maybe they will tell us.

Because someone in the State Legislature suggested that since these facilities pay the State a handling tax that all of that revenue generated remain within the Municipality and not in the State Treasury (aka: General Funds) to be spent at the Governor's pleasure. Oh, and one more thing, C.R. 534 will need to be widened to handle all that traffic coming off of Route 42 - in fact they may need to build an exit from the west bound side.
