Police Release 'Click It or Ticket' Numbers

Nearly 250 seat-belt tickets were issued over a two-week period.

Gloucester Township Police issued a total of 313 motor vehicle summons, including 244 tickets for failure to wear a seatbelt, during this year's Click It or Ticket campaign.

A $4,000 overtime grant from the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (NJDHTS) allowed the township police department to participate in the 2011 campaign, which ran May 23 through June 5.

In addition to the 244 seat-belt tickets, police working the Click It or Ticket detail over the two weeks issued three summonses for children not being properly secured in a car seat, five summonses for speeding offenses, and 10 summonses for driving with a suspended license. Additionally, one driver was charged with driving while intoxicated and three fugitives were apprehended, police said.

According to NJDHTS, motor-vehicle occupants who buckle up increase their chances of surviving a crash by as much as 75 percent.

Last year, the front seat-belt usage rate in the state rose for a 14th consecutive year to 93.73 percent. While the front seat-belt usage rate continues to increase year after year, law-enforcement and safety officials want to ultimately see a 100 percent compliance rate.

Of the state's 493 police agencies, 406 participated in the 2010 campaign, writing a total of 35,671 seat-belt tickets between May 24 and June 6. Officers working "Click It or Ticket" details also arrested 592 motorists for driving while intoxicated, according to NJDHTS.
