School District Hires PR Firm in Wake of Triton Sex Scandal
Braithwaite Communications, of Philadelphia, handles media inquiries in wake of Camden County Prosecutor's Office announcement of five educators' arrests.
SOUTHERN NJ -- Black Horse Pike Regional School District (BHPRSD) has hired a Philadelphia public relations firm in the wake of a sex scandal at Triton Regional High School that saw three teachers and two administrators arrested Thursday.
The district hired Braithwaite Communications on Thursday to handle the "media barrage" it anticipated following Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk's announcement of the educators' arrests, Braithwaite account supervisor Sarah Lindsay said.
The terms of the agreement are not known at this time.
Three Triton teachers—Jeffrey Logandro, 32, Nicholas Martinelli, 28, and Daniel Michielli, 27—are charged with having sexual contact with now-former students during the 2011-12 school year.
According to investigation documents, Michielli had sexual intercourse with his victim, who was 17 years old at the time, during the school year, while Martinelli did not engage in sexual intercourse with his victim, who was 18 at the time, until after the girl had graduated from Triton.
Martinelli, who is only charged with second-degree official misconduct at this point, did admit he had "kissed victim and touched her intimate parts on multiple occasions during the school year," according to the records.
Several students chanted "Free Martinelli!" as they left the Runnemede school Thursday afternoon. The popular physical education teacher was the boys' soccer coach through the 2011 season.
According to the investigation records, Logandro never engaged in sexual intercourse with his victim, who was 17 years old at the time of the alleged contact, but he did admit to kissing her and touching her "intimate parts." The documents also note the 32-year-old math teacher and girls' track coach apologized to his victim's parents for kissing their daughter.
Triton principal Catherine DePaul, 55, and former vice principal Jernee Kollock, 39, are charged with second-degree official misconduct, as well as hindering an investigation—a disorderly persons offense. Both are accused of attempting to cover up allegations of teacher-student sex after a student went to a substitute teacher with the information in April.
Kollock became vice principal at Timber Creek Regional High School—also a BHPRSD school—on July 1, when she replaced a retiring vice principal. It is not yet known when the BHPRSD board approved the transfer.
"It's obvious there existed a culture at Triton High School whereby teachers thought they could get away with the relationships with their students, and administrators turned a blind eye to evidence of these relationships' existence," Faulk said.
Patch was unsuccessful in attempts to reach Logandro and Michielli, a math teacher and the Class of 2012 adviser, at their homes Friday afternoon.
All five educators have been suspended. The BHPRSD Board of Education next meets Thursday night at Timber Creek.
BHPRSD has not incurred any legal fees specific to the Triton sex investigation at this point, Lindsay said.
The investigation is ongoing, according to Faulk, who encourages any potential additional victims to contact Inv. Robin Morante at 856-225-8480.

im a mother of 2 daughters so im naturally upset over this situation, HOWEVER, when are the students going to be held accountable for their actions and their part in any sexual relationship with teachers? does anyone see how these girls dress and prance around? its like putting a steak dinner in front of a starving person and telling them no they cant eat it. school administrators and all else involved need to start disciplining everyone involved not just the teachers. we all know and we've all had crushes on our teachers in our lifetimes and at one point in time, its normal, but you cant let the ones who initiate the process get away with nothing. start making the students responsible for their actions and you will see this problem dissipate. thank you for the opportunity to voice my concern

That's rich. While we're at it let's blame Monica Lewinsky for the lack of self-control exhibited by Bill Clinton. I guess we should say that instead of these guys teaching the students, the students were responsible to teach them.

Paul. Let us have some of these female students strut their stuff in front of you, rub up against you, and spread their legs to show that they are not wearing panties while you try to teach. Let us see how long you last before you sample what is offered. Since sex requires two, both are accountable. Boys and girls 13 to 18 know what sex is and are practicing it both with each other and with older people.

"Boys and girls 13 to 18" have little decision-making ability - it's in the literature, their brains are still developing. it's crazy that anyone would fault a bunch of insecure teenagers over calculating college-educated adults.
the tv caricatures described in these two comments are so bizarre. "Boys and girls 13 to 18 know what sex is" yea, small children of 13 are nothing if not renowned for their ability to be informed and knowledgeable, now let's give those precocious kids property rights and lower the voting age

I'm sorry, erica, if I implied that these students were not responsible for their actions than I was wrong. If, on the other hand, you inferred such from my comments, than you are mistaken. There is, however, a big difference between the culpability of the students in this case and that of the thirty-something and over teachers and administrators who were involved in a cover-up. The teachers broke a sacred trust and if they had even a modicum of decency they would resign their positions and seek other employment away from influencing those who trusted them but were treated so badly. Remember this, these individuals failed not only the ones with whom they became involved but they failed all the students.

Deann's incipid remark aside, what we need to know is when has the school board met and discussed the transfer, the suspensions, the allegations and now the hiring of a PR firm. We believe the school board must speak publicly on this matter. Where is the commentary from the peoples representatives? More closed door meetings and professional spinmeisters is not what wr need. A full and honest disclosure by the school board of what they knew and when they knew it. One further point, if any member of the school board fails to attend the meeting on Thursday and give their full attention to the people, we will be forced to protest at their homes and businesses. So instead of caring about students, reviewing management, supervision and oversight the Board of Education first real public announcement is to hire a PR firm? It is time to make changes at the top and clear out a board of education who is more interested in their image then the children and families of the district. It was all wrong, a full disclosure and transparency is what should be the reaction, not to get a mouth piece to hide behind.

No one should place blame on the girls, the teachers and the administration failed these children. The adults and people of authority needed to act appropriately. Are we really saying that because a girl may have worn a short skirt ect she is responsible? The adults who did not follow the laws or the districts policy are at fault. At what age, pray tell, would you finally forgo the need of the minor to protest against the actions of the responsible adult and agree that what had occurred was wrong? In most states sexual abuse of students by school personnel, then reported to school personnel, must be reported to the police, district attorney, etc. These over educated bozos did not report! They all should lose their jobs and even go to jail.
What happened to the Pennsylvania teachers, counselors, and administrators who poo pooed the boys who reported and asked for help when they were abused by Jerry Sandusky? Nothing. The PA laws were completely ignored; the school personnel were untouched by law; and, the boys were accused of slandering the wonderful Jerry Sandusky.
Most principals are accorded the privileges and rights of a king. Principals report to the school board which in turn acts as a dictator.
My prediction: more disgusting incidents will materelize across the country and more adults will be arrested, but not go to jail.

Willing or not, having sex with a minor is against the law. Teachers fraternizing with students is against school policy. These grown men engaged in inapotoptiate and illegal activities. They were caught. School officials tried to cover it up, also against the law. Now the residents and taxpayers are on the hook for the financial fallout. But by all means, blame the teenage girls, not the college educated males who had no self control or the corrupt administrators who looked to protect the predators.
Pervert priests, Jerry Sandusky and now Triton. In the end taxpayers are footing the bill for cover ups and corruption following unspeakable breaches of trust. The Sandusky case and the priests can't be compared to this. They both preyed on minor boys who were incapable of judging what was and wasn't appropriate. These girls were old enough to make those decisions, and were complicit in these sexual acts, by consenting at an age where they're legally allowed to consent. While the teachers' actions were completely inappropriate, this case doesn't compare to instances of rape. And I agree with those who say these girls may have been the instigators. As the father of a daughter in 9th grader, I can say high school girls these days are mature beyond their years, they know what they're doing.

Deal with it and here is another tid bit to choke on, why on earth would any rational person defend GROWN MEN hanging around children for sex. I agree. The Sandusky case and the catholic priest cases were pedophiles who aggressively abused NUMEROUS boys over course of years. Those cases are not relevant to this scandal. It was a consensual sex fling with three girls who were girlfriends and 3 male teacher who happen to be mutual friends also.Neither the girls nor their parents pressed charges. It was an acceptable situation. I AM IN NO WAY CONDONING THE AFFAIR. Consensual sex among teenagers is nothing new and has only flared in recent years. Many high school girls dress, act and look like woman. The one teacher can only be charged with misconduct because his female partner just happened to be 18 but the other 2 teachers are criminally charged because their partners were NOT 18 YET. Those who are already trashing these three teachers should speak to students who will tell you they were GOOD teachers who gave extra tutoring and instilled confidence and hope. They were well liked and respected. They made the Big Mistake of not walking away and they are going to pay severely for that mistake. This is One More case however where people in authoritativeness positions are NOT doing their job. The principal and vice principal are being paid to make rightful decisions in the best interest of the students. These people do not deserve their jobs and should also lose their careers, their credentials. The principal should have put a stop to it and she didn't, so in my opinion, she just threw fuel on the fire.

Blaming the way a young girl dresses or carries herself is no different than saying that the woman who walks alone at night wearing a mini skirt and high heels and gets raped is "asking for it". You can try to blame these girls all you want, bottom line- no matter how you try to spin it, is that the teachers and administrators FAILED here in every conceivable way.
That being said, I will at least concede that the way teenage girls are allowed to dress and go to school nowadays is utterly ridiculous.

They should allow every parent the right to remove their child from that school and allow them to take their kids anywhere they want until the parents are assured that this culture has ended and all stones were unturned. Make sure no other teachers are involved in this behavior and any teacher who heard of the rumors (according to the kids, everyone knew) should be disciplined! Disgrace that the whole system failed these kids! Maybe thats why a child had to go to a substitute teacher because he didn't trust another teacher or he had already tried that avenue and nothing came of it. If any school board member or anyone in administration also knew of this or even heard the rumor they should be removed also! Its not their job to do the investigation and determine if its real or a rumor, turn it over to authorities and let them do their job! Maybe if folks would of acted it wouldn't have gotten this bad.

There's the hook, "a violation of school policy." I don't have to break the law to get fired from my job; all that's required is that I violate company policy. Given the position of authority over children entrusted to him and the subsequent lack of responsibility that "health instructor Nick Martinelli, 28, of Cherry Hill" exhibited, I say it's time for Mr. Martinelli to go looking for a real job in the private sector...or maybe he can get hired in his hometown, Cherry Hill. Sorry, anonymous, there is a BIG difference intellectually between a 13 y.o. and 17 y.o. girl...which is one reason why these aren't considered rape cases. A 17 y.o. knows what she's doing, and is probably feeling cool about or even bragging about it to her friends.
And yes, these morally bankrupt teachers should have short circuited these relationships before they got started. And they will be punished, under a fairly recent law prohibiting sex between teachers or others in authority and their students/charges. But this doesn't cross the threshold of rape. Most 17 y.o.s are sexually active these days, and they can certainly consent. If they felt coerced or otherwise regretted their actions, they would've come forward early on. Instead, it was another, uninvolved student who blew the whistle.

Tom, There are actually no laws or legal definition for rape in NJ. It's sexual assault because it covers a wide range of actions, all involving some form of penetration. Teachers can be charged with this, even if the alleged victim is over 16, because they have "supervisory or disciplinary power of any nature or in any capacity over the victim."
It does not matter how old the girls are -- legally, if under 18, they cannot consent to a sexual relationship with a teacher. One of the teachers was charged with sexual assault, presumably for this reason, as outlined in the official complaint against him.
NJ's sexual assault and sexual contact laws are outlined here: http://bit.ly/R8vi1o. You have to scroll down past human trafficking to get to them.

Why should a teacher or any other profession be entitled to trust or respect. There are many teachers I respect because of the principles they exhibit not because of the title they hold. Isn't it a much more valuable lesson to learn in life to trust your core principles than blindly trust a person based off their profession. Twisted people come in all forms.

As a longtime public relations professional, I can say the fact that there's so much ire on this thread illustrates exactly why the school district needs to hire a PR agency. If you think there's passion and a demand for answers here, imagine dealing with the same coming from both the local and now national media. There's much more than individual jobs to protect here, it's a matter of reputation for the entire district and restoring faith in parents and students, as well as others like the board members and politicians who control the purse strings. Unless the district can plug this bleeding wound, there could be long-term repercussions, such as "No" votes on school budgets, that will hurt future generations. Holding the guilty staffers accountable for their actions and inactions is a given, but PR is necessary to stem the rancor like that on display here and eventually make parents comfortable again with Triton HS as a place with the best interests of their children at heart. It will take time and proactive effort.

Darren and Paul, Swordfish isn't the firm that was hired to fix this, I'm not being paid to write anything. But here's another thing to consider -- with the no doubt ridiculous amount of media inquiries coming in, would you rather school administration spend their time responding to them, or conducting the business of educating our children? Maybe working to bring up that state ranking? Hired PR serves many purposes, one of which is to allow those paid to do other jobs focus on those tasks. Fielding media phone calls, vetting opportunities, and coordinating and giving interviews -- even if it's to say the proverbial "no comment" -- takes time away from the many, many things they surely have on their plates right now. All I'm saying is it's not a waste of district money...they'd be remiss if they didn't hire someone and tried to handle this themselves.

Of course I knew you weren't hired...you know how I knew that? Because I can read. Your problem is you think you know it all and we know nothing. I spent two years at Triton and I raised six children of my own (mostly home-schooled). I think I understand the situation here much better than you, whomever you are.
As for what our administrators should be doing...not covering up the shenanigans that have been going on there while the ranking of the school dropped from 221 to 278 amongst 322. I noticed you didn't care to address that issue. Allow me to inform you not to waste your time defending the fact that you think that Triton needs PR. I guess you have a vested interest in people needing PR, correct? Triton needs much, much more than PR and if Triton had been doing its job it wouldn't need PR now. The fact is that Triton has done everything wrong and I'm not interested in a whitewash to give everybody a warm and fuzzy.
OK, RANT OFF.

BTW, Swordfish, and maybe you missed this most important point, but Triton does not have the authority to spend money on PR without approval and that's the bottom line. It's our money, the taxpayers in the district, and it belongs to no one else.

And of course, Paul, anyone who disagrees with you or has a contrarian point of view must be a blathering idiot.

State your case, Tom; show me where I'm wrong and you're not, and then I'll either refute it based on the facts as I understand them or agree with you if your argument is logical and holds up. Now, is that too difficult or do you really just not have the time?

How about we ask the 3 teachers and 2 administrators that caused all of this to pay for the PR firm? They can use the paychecks that they are still drawing.

That would be fair for the taxpayers of gt and unfair to the disgraced to the 5 perverts. This is new jersey where common sense and good ideas don't exist.

I know it's been a few weeks since the sex scandal broke but I'm very interested in where this situation goes. The PR firm, the perv still getting paid and the principal covering it up. It's still a real story.

The five arrested - teachers, principle and vice principle are technically " STILL" employed !!!! They are still receiving a paycheck ... The board legally can't fire any of them until they are indicted or plead guilty which NONE have done yet. If they plead not guilty and move forward, if a grand jury finds them guilty, they automatically do at least 5 years in jail ! I hope they are found guilty and thrown in prison. Our justice system is one that gives time to those charged to decide how they will plea. Its a game of " chicken". 3 months is LONG ENOUGH to have them sitting around, collecting our money. ALL A GAME !! Its not a game to those families dealing with the aftermath of what occurred. For all those parents out there that put blame on the girls, SHAME ON YOU !! You wouldnt be blaming them if one of them were your daughter. There is something terribly wrong with people today. No one wants to take responsibilty for anything. No one wants to get involved. Its apalling how many people knew about this long before it hit the news. They did NOTHING!! Disgrace!! Our kids are not safe ANYWHERE!
