CCC Marking Constitution Day with Free Talk on Amendments

At approximately 4,500 words and drafted in less than 100 working days, the United States Constitution is among the shortest written constitutions of any major government in the world. Since its creation, 27 Amendments have been added.

Camden County College’s Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility will explore how these changes came to be made with the free, public lecture “There Ought to be a Constitutional Amendment….” from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Sept. 17. This date is the nationally celebrated Constitution Day.

Camden County College Professor Kelly Jackson will explain what it takes to amend the Constitution, provide a little history of the 27 Amendments and clarify why changes to the document are so rare. For example, recent proposed amendments that weren’t approved by Congress have addressed such issues as balancing the budget, school prayer and same-sex marriage.
