Korea Vets to Be Honored in Conjunction with 60th-Anniversary Talks

A ceremony commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Korean War and honoring veterans of the conflict will launch Camden County College’s free public lecture series “Korea: Remembering the ‘Forgotten War’ and Its Legacy” on Sept. 25.

During the 6 p.m. event, state Sen. James Beach – who chairs the Military and Veterans’ Affairs Committee of the New Jersey State Senate – will present certificates of appreciation to Korean War veterans. Veterans interested in participating should contact Barbara Palmer of CCC’s Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility at (856) 227-7200, ext. 4333, or bpalmer@camdencc.edu.

Following the ceremony, at 7 p.m., University of Pennsylvania International Relations Program co-director Frank Plantan will present the talk “The Korean War and Its Legacies.” He will examine the obstacles for reunifying the two Koreas and how the destinies of both countries have led to the standoff we see today in Northeast Asia and on the Korean Peninsula.

The rest of the lecture series is scheduled as follows:

● Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.: “North Korea and the World since the Korean War” with Charles K. Armstrong of Columbia University.

● Oct. 16 at 7 p.m.: “Korea’s Great Divergence: North and South, 1961-87” with Gregg Andrew Brazinsky of George Washington University.

● Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.: “African Americans in the Korean War: The End of Military Segregation and the Beginning of the Modern Civil Rights Movement” with Robert W. Morrow of Morgan State University.

● Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.: “Contemporary Asia in Perspective” with Steven Hook of Kent State University.

Each event will be held in Civic Hall of the Connector Building, which is on CCC’s Blackwood Campus at College Drive and Peter Cheeseman Road in Gloucester Township. Those who want further details about the series or educators who would like to earn New Jersey professional development credit for attending should contact (856) 227-7200, ext. 4333, or CCLRregistrations@camdencc.edu.
