Patch/NJ Aid for Animals Pet of the Week: Katrina

Katrina wants to be a part of your family.

New Jersey Aid for Animals board member Kelly Matthews, a Gloucester Township resident, submitted the following to Patch:

Katrina is a truly special dog. She is classified as "special needs" because she is deaf. But being special is so much more than that! Katrina was once an adorable little puppy. Whoever owned her must not have been able to figure out why their precious puppy wouldn't listen. Maybe they thought she was just a dumb dog and Katrina found herself living outside with no one to help her learn how to be a good dog and no one to take care of her. Animal control brought her to the shelter when she broke loose and no one came to look for her.

Katrina tested heartworm positive while in the shelter. Her health deteriorated and her behavior was difficult. But a wonderful trainer saw potential in Katrina and brought her to his facility (J-Mac's K9 Academy) to board and train. Training got off to a slow start because Katrina needed her heartworm treatment and had to be kept quiet and calm. After treatment she was back on her feet and more than ready to learn! Since then Katrina has been receiving training regularly and has learned hand signals, loose leash walking and manners. She is ready to progress to her next stop—a home—and continue to learn about being a house pet. And what a fun and loving pet she will be!

Katrina and her new owner will receive complimentary family introductions, training and support at J-Mac's K9 Academy in Hammonton, NJ. Katrina will thrive with an active owner who will enjoy spending time with her on hikes or walks and providing her with regular exercise. She is a high-energy and fun-loving! We recommend that Katrina's home have teenaged or older children, as she can startle because of her inability to hear.   Most of all, Katrina needs an owner who will see her and understand her as she is- A beautiful, strong dog, a work in progress, a companion, a partner, and a friend.
