Part I begins the story of Atlas Shrugged, set in a dystopian United States where leading innovators, from industrialists to artists, are led by John Galt to go on strike, "stopping the motor of the world" to reassert the importance of the free use of the mind and of free market capitalism.

A discussion will precede the film addressing the modern resurgence of Ayn Rand's novel which made Amazon.com's bestseller list in 2009 with sales exceeding 450,000 copies sold. Does this renewed interest in the book reflect modern thinking in these troubled economic times?
