Fairies and The Fantasticks

Here are our picks for weekend events you'll love—no matter what your age.

It’s almost Halloween. The air is filled with the excitement of playing dress-up and eating tons of candy soon, and that brings out the kid in me. With a childlike enthusiasm for the weekend in mind, this week’s Get Out is stocked with events kids and grown-ups will enjoy.

Fairy Ball

  • Where/When: Garden State Discovery Museum, 2040 Springdale Rd., Suite 100, Cherry Hill; Friday, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: The Garden Sate Discovery Museum hosts an event fit for any fairy princess or prince. There will be horse and carriage rides, crafts and dancing. Sweet & Sassy will also be at this event, pampering your little royal with free fairy makeup and hairstyling all night long. Light refreshments will be served (think cupcakes, cookies and other snack foods). Tickets will be sold at the door, but the museum prefers that you purchase them in advance.   • Pricing: $30 per child (over 1 years old), $25 for member children $25, $5 for adults

Tinker Bell

  • Where/When: Garden State Discovery Museum, 2040 Springdale Rd., Suite 100, Cherry Hill; Saturday, 6:30 p.m. showtime (Attendees can start arriving at 5 p.m.)
  • What’s Going On: If you can’t make it to the Fairy Ball on Friday night, don’t fret. The Garden Sate Discovery Museum will show the ultimate fairy film, Tinker Bell, on Saturday night. This film is part of the museum’s new family movie night series, held each Saturday night in October. Watch the famous fairy come into her own as she learns what makes tinker fairies so special. The film is rated G.
  • Pricing: $5

Harvest for Hunger

  • Where/When: Collingswood Grand Ballroom, 315 White Horse Pike, Collingswood; Friday, 7 to 10 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: This benefit event helps support the Cathedral Kitchen's efforts to feed the poor. Spend the night tasting wines and specialty beers. There will also be a live auction and guests can savor a variety of hors d'oeuvres and desserts prepared by the chefs and culinary students of the Cathedral Kitchen. Rick Williams of 6ABC and Dr. Jocelyn Williams from Cooper Medical School in Camden will host the event.
  • Ticket Pricing: $65 per ticket

Malcolm McGhoul Saves Halloween Town

  • Where/When: The Broadway Theater of Pitman, 43 S. Broadway, Pitman; Friday, 10 a.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: The kids will love Mr. Malcolm’s spooktacular music-filled event. This interactive show is all about the monsters of Halloween. Lots of audience participation will be required and there will be more giggles than scares as Mr. Malcolm, as Malcolm McGhoul, tries to help the monsters stay put. He doesn’t want the President of Transylvania to force the monsters to move.
  • Pricing:  $9, plus any applicable fee

Mainstage presents The Fantasticks

  • Where/When: Wedgewood Country Club, 200 Hurffville Rd., Sewell; Friday and Saturday, Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Show starts at 8 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: The Mainstage Center for the Arts presents The Fantasticks at Wedgewood Country Club. Come out for a complete meal and a show, or stop by for the show only. Dinner consists of an appetizer, salad, entrée (with two sides), a beverage and dessert. The Fantasticks, the longest-running off-Broadway musical, follows Matt and Louisa, two neighbors who were set up by their dads and tricked into falling in love. They pair separate and end up developing a greater appreciation for each other.
  • Pricing: Dinner and show, $39 per adult, $27 for kids 12 and under; Show only, $15 per adult, kids 12 and under and seniors, $12

Haunted Hayride and Kiddie Pumpkin Patch

  • Where/When: Camden County Health and Executive Campus at Lakeland, 100 Woodbury Turnersville Rd., Blackwood; Friday and Saturday between 7 and 10:30 p.m. (haunted hayride); Sunday, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. (pumpkin patch)
  • What’s Going On: Camden County 4-H is hosting this family-friendly three-day event. The haunted hayride will take place in the dark woods. Beware of the ghosts, witches and ghouls that lurk in the night. For a not-so-scary fall event, come out to the Pumpkin Patch on Sunday. There will be rides and a costume contest for children in eighth grade and below.
  • Pricing: Haunted hayride,$8 for adults and $5 for children 14 and under; Pumpkin Patch, $5 per person

 Civil War Encampment

  • Where/When: Athletic Fields, College Dr. & Little Gloucester Rd., Blackwood; Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: It turns out you don’t have to travel to a far-away destination for a Civil War re-enactment. Visit Camden County College's athletic fields this Saturday. The Center for Civic Leadership and Responsibility is offering this free event. Watch Richard Mendoza and the 12th NJ Re-enactor Unit as they show you what soldiers did during the Civil War. You'll see drills, learn about army life, watch a soldier's disciplinary hearing and a mail call. Registration is required.
  • Pricing: Free

 Fall Craft and Renaissance Fair

  • Where/When: Williamstown Middle School, 561 Clayton Rd., Williamstown; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • What’s Going On: This event will feature more than 90 crafters. You’ll be able to shop till you drop and door prizes will be given out every half-hour. There will also be fun activities for kids and refreshments.
  • Pricing: Free admission, vendor prices vary
