Denny's Returning to Gloucester Township

Lumberjack breakfasts, burgers and shakes will be on the menu again when Denny's reopens in Gloucester Township.

Get ready for the return of the Grand Slam, Gloucester Township.

After being shuttered for two years, the Denny’s restaurant at 1410 Blackwood Clementon Rd. is set to reopen.

“If everything goes well… we’ll open on Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.,” says Ken Fitzpatrick, who currently works at a Denny’s in Turnersville. “That’s our target.”

Fitzpatrick could not release any more information.

Denny’s left Gloucester Township in 2010. The empty building was the subject of one of Gloucester Township Patch’s first Visions for Vacancies—the entry netted dozens of suggestions, many of them restaurants and several a plea for the return of Denny’s.

Do you plan to pony up for a Grand Slam on Nov. 18? Are you happy Denny’s is returning to Gloucester Township? Tell us in the comments.

How about the Stone Grill?
Paul J. DiBartolo October 16, 2012 at 12:33 PM
The question is, Matt, and I'm not asking this to antagonize, but did you, and will you now, patronize Denny's? If not, it is eventually looking at the same fate.
Michael October 16, 2012 at 12:35 PM
It's a start, but it's only one of about 100 empty properties on Blackwood-Clementon Road between Little Gloucester Road and Laurel Road.

Is it the same owners? I was told by one of the servers that the owner had abandoned the restaurant, his creditors, and his employees (with no notice) around the holidays and ran off. The employees came to work that day and stood around crying in the parking lot of the locked building. Hopefully it is different owners who will be responsible and do well.

Ate at the old Denny's once, nasty & dirty. Hope this one isn't the same. Doubt I'll even give it a second try.
Charles October 16, 2012 at 01:48 PM
Give it a try, if under new management. How else can we encourage people to re-open the abandoned businesses along BC Rd.?
Matthew Steffen October 16, 2012 at 01:52 PM
Hey big Paul! Oh yea, I'll give them a try. You? However, I don't remember when they were open last.

How about bringing stores / eateries that people really want? If Deptford can do it w/Deptford Landing why can't Gloucester township do it with all those vacant stores on Blackwood-Clementon Road.
Nicole October 16, 2012 at 02:36 PM
I'm glad it's coming back and I'm also pretty sure it's under new management. It was always busy so I was surprised when it closed. I think it will have a great future.
Patricia Grieco October 16, 2012 at 02:46 PM
I'm glad to hear about this. I love breakfast dinners every now and again. I just hope the dirty old carpeting has been replaced~ I'll give it a shot! Thx.

I am not a Denny's kind of guy because even when looking for a cheap eat I tend to go for a little bit more upscale of a place; maybe an Applebee's or the like. I think I went to Denny's one or two times (I've been in Blackwood this time about 18 years) and once for sure was because I was meeting a friend of one of my kid's; so, a younger guy, and we met there at his request. Even my mother-in-law when going out for a cheap lunch with one of her grandchildren tends to go to Friendly's. The question in my mind is will the area support both?
Michelle Wolfson October 16, 2012 at 04:39 PM
I hope that it is under new management. That place was dirty, dark, old, and the food left something to be desired. it would be nice to see a business succeed there.

Sorry never knew you walk around with your nose in da air Paul .......;-)

Food Courts tend to be popular,so why not some creative types coming up with a new concept for these tired old "strip mall-type" stores that are vacant. How convenient might it be to look for automotive parts among three or four stores in the same area? How competitive would they have to be or how varied might their selections have to be? If I were a marketing expert, I'd think about this; however, I'm not so it's up to someone else.
Matthew Steffen October 16, 2012 at 06:34 PM
Hi Paul. No, Denny's will most likely fail. The socioeconomics of the local area just won't support it and its competitors. The nicer residential areas, which are further away, are much closer to more perceptually plausible choices such as the Deptford Mall. I'll spend my dime at Denny's though because I love this township.
Jessica Isele October 16, 2012 at 06:35 PM
anybody know how to submit an application for the denny's?
Paul J. DiBartolo October 16, 2012 at 06:38 PM
It's an acquired talent, Darren, from living, working, and playing in Gloucester Township;-) You should try it some time.
Paul J. DiBartolo October 16, 2012 at 06:41 PM
I might stop in myself, Matt. I just don't think my business will be enough to keep them going. Maybe we should have Township Meetings there, that way the peeps who are actually waiting for Township business to begin can get coffee and donuts while the awards are being given out. Kill two birds with one stone. Whatta ya think, Darren?
Debi October 16, 2012 at 10:09 PM
I am excited about Denny's return! I like the new Chinese buffet and I do go to Friendly's occasionally but for lunch for just my daughter and myself it's always over $40.00 with the tip. Denny's food is just as good or better and much cheaper for this lady who can't afford the "upscale" eateries mentioned. I hope they do well and stay as long as we do in Gloucester Township.
Schu October 17, 2012 at 02:16 AM
Thank you but I'm going to pass.
Joseph Russell October 17, 2012 at 02:46 AM
I'd've loved to see something a little uh, healthier show up in that spot... A Denny's in a barely walkable suburb is the poster child for obesity in America.

Dennys is now owned by a new corporation that has spared no expense in the renovation of the store. It is absolutely beautiful inside and will do wonders for blackwood!!
Betty Keir October 17, 2012 at 11:13 PM
I feel the same way. I thought it was always pretty busy. I am happy to hear it is returning.
matt dougherty October 18, 2012 at 12:44 PM
This time a sign in the men's room will read " We aim to please so please aim" And please remember to not throw cigarette butts in the the urinals---they're hard to lite!
matt dougherty October 18, 2012 at 12:49 PM
Are you a foreigner ? They will need just waitreses, no dishwashers because they will have paper plates ! They will be hiring carpenters to build a deck !
Paul J. DiBartolo October 18, 2012 at 01:03 PM
Give it a break and walk around the block a couple more times. In fact, download the First Lady's recommended daily diet plan and you should be good to go. It's easier to have someone tell you what to eat than decide for yourself anyway. Really, Joseph, can't you just abide to let people make up their own minds? Do you have any idea what the Constitution is about?
Paul J. DiBartolo October 18, 2012 at 01:06 PM
Let me guess...could money and investors pose a possible problem to your vision? Investment involves risk and so has to hold the promise of a suitable ROI (Return on Investment).
matt dougherty October 18, 2012 at 04:07 PM
Nice place to negotiate divorce settlements ! My ex and I did that and so did my new wife ! Unreal !
