Gloucester Township Food Tour: Cheesesteaks

Bob Wankel recaps his tour and counts down his favorite Gloucester Township spots to grab a cheesesteak.

One of the best parts of living in Gloucester Township is it's home to a pretty solid variety of specialty shops and restaurants.

But, as I said before I began this cheesesteak crusade, I've always been skeptical about the township's cheesesteak options.

So I set out, tried some new places in different parts of the township, and, well, I still couldn't find what I was looking for.

Ultimately, there were very few places around town that swayed me from this mindset.

There were several shops I visited that offered sandwiches on stale rolls, some were flooded with too much cheese, some with not enough meat. In most cases, I would have been better off stopping at Wawa for a roll, opening up a box of Steak-umm and throwing one on the pan. And that's saying something—I'm not a big fan of Steak-umm.

Despite my general displeasure with what I found, three of the shops I mentioned last week are definitely worth a visit.

Each is ranked and linked with my previous write up below.

1.

2.

3.

And while I enjoyed Sprota's and Antonino's offerings, Larry's was the only place I'd say you absolutely have to go out of your way to check out. It's obvious they've been doing cheesesteaks at Larry's since the '50s—they've perfected the art to truly become a treasure of Gloucester Township.

I know what you're thinking. Man, only three places? What gives?

Yep. Sorry. I'm not throwing an uninspired, run-of-the-mill sandwich on this list just to fill it out.

You want another option? Try Wawa. Wawa produces a cheesesteak that defines mediocrity, but it's just as a good as any sandwich that I found along the way.

Next up in the "Gloucester Township Food Tour" series will be best wings. If you have a suggestion for a can't-miss spot, leave a comment below, or feel free to shoot me an email at rwankel2@comcast.net.

I have to disagree I don't think Larry's is anything special, but then again I haven't had a cheesesteak there in like 6 years so maybe it has changed. I live right down the street from Sprota's, but haven't tried it yet.
