Visions for Vacancies: Checkers

The Chews Landing Road fast-food joint closed recently.

The Checkers fast-food restaurant on Chews Landing Road closed its doors recently.

In recent weeks, we've asked our readers with "Visions for Vacancies" to identify the types of businesses they wanted to see in the former Denny's and former Super Fresh locations on Blackwood Clementon Road.

This week, we want you to tell us and your fellow Gloucester Township Patch readers what you'd like to see in the now-vacant Checkers building in the Market Place shopping center.

This one will likely be a bit more tricky than our first two "Visions for Vacancies" features, given the unique size and shape of Checkers buildings.

What do you think?

Another fast-food restaurant?

An electronics store?

A jewelry store?

Maybe you have an "outside the box" idea?

Whatever your thoughts, please share them in the comments section below.

UPDATE, 2:15 p.m. 5/9: It appears several Checkers franchises in the Camden County area have closed down. The Checkers on Cross Keys Road, in the township's Sicklerville section, is among the franchises to have also closed.

What's stopping you?

I say panera bread or smoothie bar.People are really trying to watch what they eat and the more choices of healthier food we have around here(rather than driving to vorhees,or wherever theres a smoothie bar),the easier it is for people to do that. Please, for the love of GT...no fast food!

This went from a nice idea from an article to you two poisoning it with your political tinged responses. I know you two think that you are a voice for your community, but really you are just annoying.

Checkers is odd to replace, because their lot requirements are so much different from normal retail/restaurants. The lot is too small to be replaced by another fast food or even high end fast food restaurant(Panera Bread, Chipotle, Baja Fresh) It is only sized for an ice cream/water ice place, but the building is in too good of a condition to make buying that for an ice cream/water ice place a viable business plan. The grand hope is someone makes a mistake and buys the franchise and reopens it as a Checkers and struggles to make money for many years.

I'm surprised that no one has yet suggested "A drive-thru payment window for red light camera tickets"

David get a Clue and don't assume things , Now me being annoying "SIR" that is your opinion. Now my opinion of you is someone with no CLUE ........Just care , I do
Darren Gladden May 10, 2012 at 12:01 AM
Know what Pete . We should get the people we sent over 800,000 Dollars to Re-Do the checkers into a nice Smoothie Drive thru . Think Tom Cardis has the time to give them a call and see if they can Re-vest the money we sent them or do you think Tom is holding down to many Jobs to make the call .............

How about fast food fish. I think Long John Silver is the name of the franchise. I believe there is one in Berlin, but that's too far. We don't need no mare fat ... I mean fast food burger or chicken joints.

That's really what it's all about, David, nice ideas, right? I'm wondering where we're going with this because all the wishing and hoping in the world will not open one solitary business venture in the township of Gloucester. It's time for our leadership to stand up, if they can get their minds off of solar panels for a couple of minutes, and start looking for a way to encourage commerce in GT. Wake up and smell the coffee, David, this is the real world not fantasy land.
Paul J. DiBartolo May 10, 2012 at 02:09 PM
Good idea, Pete, but let me take it a step further. Why not incorporate it into the Easy-Pass system? That way, you fund the account automatically via credit card when you violate the Simon Sez Stop before-turning-on-red Rule...BANG!...your payment is automatically deducted. Never mind, too negative. I prefer, however, to call it being brutally honest, something most care to shy away from.

This article is about hoping and wishful thinking. The township leadership can't fix everything. The Denny's went out because it was poorly run and it will soon reopen as a Denny's. Superfresh is empty due to greed. Checkers was a bad decision in the first place. The township didn't drive anyone out or keep anyone from coming in these cases. Benderson Development can't find anyone to fill the old Cherrywood liquors, not because they don't have a vast stable of potential tenants, it is because it is an oddly placed building too close to the road without parking in front of the building. There are practical reasons these buildings are empty, not because the man is holding anyone back.

There is little value in life to being a blowhard. The more words that come out of your mouth, the less value they have.
David McCloskey, Jr. May 10, 2012 at 04:46 PM
One last thing, because I am coming to as bad as you two. Denny's article 4 blowhard comments, of 41 total 9.7%. Superfresh 8 blowhard comments, of 21 total 38%. Checkers 7 blowhard comments, of 17 total(5 of which are mine). 41% or 70.5%, depending on how you look at it. Feeding your egos is so important that you can't see how it isn't rallying people to your cause, but driving away anyone who may have been interested in the topic.

Hold on , I see OTHER towns building . I have talk to people who own bussiness that would love to come to GT and open up shop but the powers to be push up on them in a heart beat and chase them away . Now when them bussiness owners get a CLUE and start speaking out . Look out the system in GT will go down . Come on man we are fighting for a better place for our KIDS and their kids . WAKE UP nobody wants to fight , but things have to change we are losing the FIGHT .......So call me what you want to call me but I'm just a man that cares
Jane Aquila May 10, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Panera Bread would be nice. You have to go to Voorhees or Marlton for the nearest ones.
