Voorhees Megaplex Gets New Owner, Again

Rave Motion Pictures, still called Ritz 16 by many people, is under a Georgia company's control now.

Voorhees’s big multiplex is changing owners, and names, again.

Rave Motion Pictures is now Carmike Cinemas, the Courier-Post reports. But to many, the 16-screen movie house still known as Ritz 16. In July, Carmike, a Georgia company, bought out Rave, which was a brand of Cinemark theaters. Cinemark also owns a theater in neighboring Somerdale.

The Haddonfield-Berlin Road movie theater built its reputation on features then otherwise hard to find in South Jersey: a rule against children under 6 years old; art house, foreign and independent movies playing alongside blockbusters; and an upscale café that sold cheesecake and cappuccinos to moviegoers. It opened in 1996 and grew from 12 to 16 screens.

But the Ritz always had competition, especially when Loews in Cherry Hill opened two years later. With changes in management, Ritz/Rave saw a noticeable dip in art house movie offerings in favor of popcorn blockbusters.
