Camden County 9/11 Ceremony Sunday at 9:11

A 5K race to benefit a veterans group will follow the ceremony at Cooper River Park.

Camden County’s remembrance of the Sept. 11 attacks will begin at 9:11 a.m. Sunday, county officials announced.

U.S. Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ) and county Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli Jr. will lead the ceremony at Jack Curtis Stadium in Cooper River Park.

The Collingswood Choir will perform at the ceremony, and there will be a bell ringing for the attack victims. An American flag, bearing the names of the victims, will provide the ceremony backdrop.

Following the ceremony, the 9-11 Heroes Run 5K race around Cooper River will step off at 10:28 a.m. The time coincides with the collapse of the north tower of the World Trade Center.

The Travis Manion Foundation sponsors the race. The foundation’s mission—“to honor the fallen by challenging the living”—guides its work in helping veterans and their families through the Heroes Scholarship Fund. The foundation’s namesake, Marine Travis Manion, was killed by enemy sniper fire in Iraq in 2007.

Racers from Camden County, local law enforcement and public safety organizations are scheduled to participate.

“On this 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, we look to our heroes with reverence and gratitude—from the service members who fought valiantly to defend America’s freedoms to the first responders who selflessly came to rescue the innocent victims of this tragedy,” Andrews said in a statement.

“As the profound impact of these terrible attacks continues to live on, we must remember the strength and compassion that our country demonstrated as families, communities, and Americans—from every walk of life—came together to recover and rebuild not only the aftermath of these attacks but also the soul of our great nation.”

The 5K race begins at the stadium, located at North Park Drive and McClellan Avenue. To register to walk or run, go to 911heroesrun.com.
