Deadline Today for Black History Month Celebration Nominations

The Township Council and Mayor David Mayer will honor exemplary black citizens who have contributed to the township's betterment.

The deadline to nominate someone to be included among the honorees in the township's Feb. 27 Black History Month Celebration is today.

Nominations must be submitted to the township Clerk's Office, located in the municipal building, by 5 p.m.

The ceremony will be held at the beginning of Council's Feb. 27 meeting, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

Nomination forms, which must be submitted along with an essay detailing the nominee's accomplishments and community contributions, are available here.

Nominees must have made "significant contributions in the area of community service, personal or professional achievements, or general good deeds that have impacted favorably on our citizens," according to the township's official website.

In order to be eligible, an individual must be an exemplary citizen who has demonstrated significant contributions in the areas of community service (employment history not included) and must currently reside or work in Gloucester Township.

Reference letters and other documentation—certificates of merit, newspaper articles, etc.—may be included with the submission application, which will be reviewed by a three-person panel appointed by Mayor David Mayer.

Past honorees are not eligible.

This year's program will mark the ninth consecutive year Council has hosted the Black History Month Celebration during a February meeting. This year's class will push the total number of honorees over 100, as 99 people have been recognized through the program so far.

Past honorees include Councilman Sam Siler (2004 and 2007), former councilwoman Crystal Evans (2007), Black Horse Pike Regional School District President Joyce Ellis (2009), and scores of teachers and students from Gloucester Township Public Schools and Black Horse Pike Regional School District.
