Engineer Receives Award for Park Upgrade Project

John Cantwell, of Remington & Vernick, received a first-place award from the New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers for work at Marge Martin Sports Complex.

A private engineer who does site design and project management for Gloucester Township earlier this month received a statewide professional organization's top award for his work on recent upgrades at Margin Martin Sports Complex at Lakeland.

The New Jersey Society of Municipal Engineers awarded John Cantwell, of Haddonfield-based Remington & Vernick Engineers, its first-place award for a municipal parks or recreation project for 2011.

Cantwell was joined by Remington & Vernick colleagues and township officials when he was presented the award at the League of Municipalities' annual conference, in Atlantic City, on Nov. 16.

Work on the Marge Martin Sports Complex was completed earlier this year.

In 2008, Remington & Vernick was awarded a contract to complete a master plan for the Lakeland sports complex, which previously included just one street-hockey rink for Gloucester Township Hockey Alliance.

The resulting $2 million project included renovation of the existing rink and construction of two new hockey rinks and a fieldhouse complete with a concession stand, bathroom facilities, and a meeting room. It also included the installation of a T-ball field.

The new rinks allow Gloucester Township Hockey Alliance, which serves as the street-hockey home to some 600 kids, to host South Jersey Hockey Tournament games—something that was unthinkable with just the old rink.

Repairs have been completed on one of the Marge Martin street-hockey rinks after it was determined the surface material had not settled properly after it was laid during the winter.

Cantwell regularly attends Township Council meetings as the representative from Remington & Vernick, which serves as municipal engineer.
