Minor Car Accident Damages Cemetery

The accident occurred on Chews Landing Road around 8 a.m.

A two-car accident on Chews Landing Road Thursday morning did not result in any injuries, according to police, but did bring damage to a historic Old Black Horse Pike church's cemetery.

A section of the fence surrounding the cemetery at The Church of St. John the Evangelist of Chews Landing was felled and two headstones dislodged as a result of the accident.

The accident occurred around 8 a.m.

No one sustained serious injuries in the crash, Gloucester Township Police Lt. Brian McKendry said.

An older, white Lexus sedan left Chews Landing Road and ended up in the cemetery after the crash.

The Lexus knocked over the fence and then dislodged a headstone where Dorothy A. Simpson is buried and one where Frank E. and Harriet A. Guetens are buried.

It is not known whether any tickets were issued Thursday in connection with the accident.
