Safe Kids data shows that approximately 975 children under the age of 14 die each year in car crashes.

That number would be a lot lower if child-safety seats and seat belts were used properly.

A six-state study examining the use of child-restraint systems found that 73 percent showed one critical misuse, police said. The most common misuses were loose seat-belt attachment to the safety device and loose harness straps securing the child in the device.

A properly installed child-safety seat reduces fatal injury in passenger cars by 71 percent for infants less than 1 year old and by 54 percent for toddlers 1 to 4. For children 4 to 7, booster seats have shown to reduce injury risk by 59 percent compared to seat belts alone.
