Police Stop More Than 100 Cars on Cross Keys Road

The second day of the Cross Keys Road Joint Safe Passage Initiative was conducted April 21.

If you happened to have one of those bad-driving spells—we all have one from time to time—and it came as you drove along Cross Keys Road on April 21, it's likely you ended up with a ticket.

April 21 marked the second day of enhanced traffic enforcement along Cross Keys Road, from the White Horse Pike to Black Horse Pike, as part of the multi-agency Cross Keys Road Joint Safe Passage Initiative.

Gloucester Township Police announced that its officers and members of the Pine Hill, Washington Township and Winslow Township police departments conducted a total of 128 traffic stops on Cross Keys Road April 21.

Of those stops, five tickets were issued for speeding, four for driving while suspended and 11 for driving unregistered vehicles. The one-day initiative also netted two warrant arrests, township police said.

Police from Berlin and Pine Hill boroughs and Gloucester, Monroe, Washington, and Winslow townships are participating in the initiative, which launched in March.

Analysis showed there were a total of 792 car accidents on Cross Keys Road between the two pikes in 2009 and 2010, according to police.

In explaining the reasoning behind the initiative, police also pointed to a 2007 study by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission that indicated as many as 20,500 cars travel along Cross Keys Road between Sicklerville and Johnson roads, near the Atlantic City Expressway interchange, in a single 24-hour period.
