Pope's Philly Trip to Endorse Straight Marriage

Pope Benedict XVI will travel to Philadelphia in 2015 for a World Meeting of Families summit as the Roman Catholic Church makes a clear statement about gay marriage.

In a clear statement in support of traditional "one man-one woman" marriage in the United States, the Vatican has put Philadelphia at ground zero of the debate over gay marriage.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Philadelphia, which includes Roman Catholic Churches in Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs, has announced it will host the Vatican's 2015 World Meeting of Families. Pope Benedict XVI is likely to appear.

The selection of Philadelphia came as Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput  attended this year's World Meeting in Milan, Italy, over the weekend. The meeting is held once every three years.

In making the announcement, the Archbishop also made his position on gay marriage clear, saying in a news release:

"The family is founded on a deep and loving union between one man and one woman for mutual support and the nurturing of children. This meeting in Philadelphia will be a wonderful opportunity to highlight the family as the basic evangelizing unit of the church. Every effort to promote marriage and the family serves not only the church, but also the common good."

Politics, same-sex marriage and the media

The announcement comes just weeks after President Obama officially changed his position and came out in support of same-sex marriage. The World Meeting of Families is usually attended by the pope, assuring major domestic and international media attention for the Vatican's position on marriage and families.

Archbishop Chaput acknowledged as much in a statement released on Sunday, saying:

"It's fitting that this gathering, which celebrates the cornerstone of society, will take place in America's cradle of freedom. The Holy Father's choice is a gift to the local  church in Philadelphia and to the whole nation."

What do you think of the announcement and the Archdiocese's position on marriage and the family? Is Philadelphia a fitting place to stage the debate?

interesting discussion
Ric June 06, 2012 at 01:13 AM
David Vaccaro, why is it that the loudest critics of gay rights, like yourself, always turn out to be major closet cases, gays in denial. Betcha your closest is decorated quite nicely.
Ric June 06, 2012 at 01:17 AM
Cinna guy, it is strange how no one else brought that up. Since you brought it up, obviously the thought of marrying dogs occurred to you
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 01:21 AM
Ric, I don't know what the basis of your belief is but if it makes you feel gay, so be it.
Ric June 06, 2012 at 01:42 AM
David Vaccaro, you are dominating this discussion. 1 out of 3 messages were written by you. Clearly you are a safe hating homosexual.. Just a couple more messages by you and it will be 1 out of 2 messages are written by you!
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 01:50 AM
Ric, What's a "safe hating" homosexual. Maybe if you were clearer with your postings I would not have to keep answering you asking for clarification.
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 02:11 AM
Matt Skoufalos, On another subject...when is Patch(you being the head leftist) going to do another puff piece on President Obama what with Scott Walker crushing the recall effort in Wisconsin? I think this loss will have some profound impact on us here in New Jersey. I'm looking forward to your next piece telling us all how wonderful Obamacare is going to be for us all and how brilliant its author. p.s I love Patch's article on Facebook...do you "Facebook"?

Bob's not answering because he's one of our PA editors (Trediffryn-Easttown, specifically) and doesn't get notifications on comments posted when we pick up his stories on this side of the Delaware. It's less of a conspiracy than you may think, Dave.

Pretty self-explanatory. The controversy's over gay marriage (which, like it or not, now exists in at least some states), and the Pope's coming in to say man-woman marriage is the only option (big surprise, I know). Traditional, straight, heterosexual - semantically, it's all the same, and since gay marriage is an option, it's necessary to have some kind of qualifier. "Straight" fits more neatly. Parse it to your heart's delight, though, Dave.

Bryan, "self-explanatory"... to you...a young and partisan liberal. Anyone trying to represent themselves as delivering information in impartial way wouldn't use such a term. The Pope, any Pope is understood to be the spiritual leader of a religious movement wouldn't use the word "straight" and only a half-wit with an agenda would mix such a term in his title. If he went on to mention his personal view and used the term "straight" would have been fine but Bobby didn't. It is you that has to "parse to your heart's delight"<-that's very appropriate.
Bryan Littel (Editor) June 06, 2012 at 01:05 PM
What term would you have used, Dave?
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 06:01 PM
Bryan, Any normally educated person would have written the title of the article, "Pope's Philly Trip to Endorse Traditional Marriage". It wouldn't have betrayed the author as bias, snarky or ill-educated. It would have been perfectly acceptable to have used the term "straight" in the body of the article. What he wrote doesn't make sense unless you are writing for an outfit dedicated to pushing an extreme philosophy.

Thank you, David, for being the articulate and well-reasoned voice of the all-too-silent, but overwhelming majority of our community. The attempts to twist and distort your logic by those who don't agree are sad commentary on societal trends and the ability of people to engage in reasonable and civil discourse. I do appreciate your sense of humor. (Of course, I am the proud owner of a signed, 1st edition "Book of Chris" so I guess that slants my thinking a bit!) Keep on keepin' on!!!
Roland W June 06, 2012 at 08:28 PM
Dave, I've been reading your posts for a while and noticed gays really disgust you. At first I thought this was religion but I'm thinking differently after you told someone to take cyanide for having a different opinion from you. I don't remember that one in the bible but I read an article where if people hate gays it's because they're really gay themselves. Come on Dave, it's a new age! You can come out of the closet!
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 11:41 PM
JustWondering, That is nice of you to say. I'm always encouraged when I meet people that are brave enough to endure the wave of insanity that gets aimed at those who don't accept the maniacal arguments offered by the easily led and weak-minded. There are plenty of people that still have no problem distinguishing truth from nonsense. The birth of the computer and instant communications have given lunatics the sense they are in control...fortunately they're not, but some have yet to realize it. Dave
David Vaccaro June 06, 2012 at 11:50 PM
Roland W, I suggest you up the prescription on your reading glasses because you see things that don't exist. I've never said what you have implied. But speaking of "Gays"...it always amuses me when those who supposedly have sensitivities that us mere mortals lack, suggest that we are "closet" gays and that would be some kind of punishment. As though to be such would be a fate worse than death. Roland...you are very odd.
MacArthur June 07, 2012 at 01:28 AM
Brilliant! We all know straight couples only produce straight children, so... wait, I think I see a hole in this argument.
Matt Skoufalos (Editor) June 07, 2012 at 01:44 AM
I'm going to (once again) remind the commenters here about our terms of service. You can talk about whatever you want. You have the right to express your opinions. But there's nothing that says that you're allowed to namecall, harrass, threaten, or bully your fellow Patchers. Keep the ugliness at bay or you will not have the privilege of communicating here.
Roland W June 07, 2012 at 01:47 AM
Queen Dave, Yep, I agree. That's me. The easily led. Actually, my viewpoint is the same as yours. I'm just not stupid enough to say it like you do. As far as calling me sensitive, I find that pretty insulting. If you're going to insult me, I wish you'd just tell me to take cyanide like you did to the other guy. Good for you sticking up for the other closet gays like you. Your more sensitive than people give you credit for.
David Vaccaro June 07, 2012 at 01:56 AM
Roland W, "Queen" Dave? Why do you consider this an insult? Can't you see the weakness of your position? How does using homosexual slurs make you more accepting than me? You think implying I'm gay insults me. If that makes you feel you've harmed me in some way...then I'm gay. Now how does this make your position superior to mine? Roland...you're not only odd but very misguided.
Roland W June 07, 2012 at 02:47 AM
Dave, Dave, Dave, I'm not trying to harm you buddy, I'm not trying to say my position is superior to yours. I'm saying my viewpoint is ignorant, intolerant and condescending and to think I'm morally superior and to insult others because their viewpoint is different makes me a jackass! Just like you! We're brothers in arms. As for telling me I'm odd and misguided, we sure are.
David Vaccaro June 07, 2012 at 03:43 AM
Roland W., Hey, why don't you just speak for yourself like I do? When the sun is low in the sky I have my own shadow. You should try to establish your own identity rather than try to absorb mine. You know who you should check out? Ric. He's your kind of "guy" or whatever.
Roland W June 07, 2012 at 10:14 PM
When the sun is low I have my own shadow? What kind of left wing liberal crappola is that? You sure are making it hard for me to absorb that jackass identity of yours. Oh well, all I can say is Long live the Queen! Hey, that was a stupid, ignorant thing for me to say. I'm back in Dave world and life is good.
David Vaccaro June 07, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Ric, I know it's you. :-) Dave p.s. I must really bother you...no?
Ric June 07, 2012 at 10:34 PM
LOL! David Vacarro owns this report on gay marriage. Most of the replies, 17 of the 44 (over 1/3) were made by Vaccaro. Poor fella is consumed with gay marriage because he is trying to suppress his urge to dance the rumba out of his closet. I am guessing by the time David is done replying, he will have written 39 replies, which will be over half the replies made. Well, he has no life other than spending his nights at Patch moaning about gay marriage. Come out of the closet, David,
David Vaccaro June 07, 2012 at 10:39 PM
Ric/Roland, You really surprise me...you can count. (-: Dave
Roland W June 08, 2012 at 03:00 AM
Dave, It's just like you're Sherlock Holmes, the way you figured out I'm Ric/Roland. I guess you used your keen sharp intellect to painstakingly gather all the clues. I should have realized your ability for brilliant deduction when you wrote in one post that all the people in AC spend their money on drugs and prostitutes. Pure genius! I think it's time more people hear from the bible of Dave. How about I drive you to AC so you can tell "the people" there to stop spending your tax dollars on drugs and ho's. I think it's high time "those people" heard from someone with a mind like yours. Just a little advice, Dave. 1) You better have a nice pair of sneakers. 2) You better be able to run a 3 minute mile. Well, Dave old chum, I think it's time you started commenting on some of the other stories. The world shouldn't be deprived of that thoughtful insight only you can provide. I, for one, can't wait. p.s. Hey Sherlock, who is Ric, anyway?
David Vaccaro June 08, 2012 at 03:16 AM
Roland/Ric, I don't know what your problem is. If anyone is showing the "man love" you were accusing me of, it's you. You are keeping a count on the number of postings I make. You are creating multiple names to post under to respond to me. I've admitted that you can consider me gay as I'm a very happy person but you want or need more. I don't have any compulsions like you do..."you" are pursuing me. You seem to be possessed with me since you quote my postings. Ric/Roland...I can't quote your posts because I couldn't care less what you think. I'm guessing you are just lonely and I don't mind helping you out once in a while going back and forth on a subject but I'm married. And just so you know, I've posted on a whole host of subjects...you are the one who seems fixated on this Gay thing. I wonder why. Dave
