Just in Time for Thanksgiving, Sen. Cory Booker Helps Save the Day, Again

The former mayor of Newark dropped by the Food Bank of South Jersey on Wednesday to fill bags of food for the needy.

Ever wonder what Sen. Cory Booker is doing when he’s not pulling a neighbor out of a burning building or digging a snowed-in resident out in a blizzard?

Well, volunteering at the Food Bank of South Jersey, preparing meals for the needy, of course.

The newly sworn in junior U.S. senator from the Garden State was on hand 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Food Bank of South Jersey in Pennsauken to briefly stuff bags of food for needy children and to call attention to the organization's mission of helping to feed more than 200,000 people in Camden, Burlington, Gloucester and Salem counties.

Booker, the former mayor of Newark, a Democrat, who was elected in October to fill the remainder of the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg's term, said he hopes news of him taking time to help the needy before one of the biggest holidays of the year will generate publicity and support for the Food Bank year round.

"Many people don't realize how many tens of thousands of New Jerseyans live in food insecurity," Booker said. "We have a lot of work to do as a state. With a state that has this much capacity but yet such a great need, the little bit I can do today to draw attention to some of the humble heros of our state is very, very important."
