Township Native Playing Football at U of P

Ed Kispert, a Gloucester Township native and senior football player at the University of Pennsylvania, sat down last week to talk about his senior year.

Ed Kispert, a Gloucester Township native and senior football player at the University of Pennsylvania, sat down last week to talk about his senior year and what its like to be a part of the Penn football team.

Before he began his time at Penn, Kispert played baseball and basketball in Gloucester Township, and was a multi-sport athlete at Gloucester Catholic High School. He was a member of the Gloucester Catholic Class of 2008.

Kispert had originally planned on attending the United States Military Academy at West Point. He changed his mind after visiting Penn. The football team and family atmosphere reminded him of what he had with his teammates at GCHS, and he enrolled in the fall of 2008. Here, he serves as a part of Penn's special teams unit.

All college athletes have crazy schedules, but the Economics/Political Science major manages to find a balance.

When asked what he plans to do after this season ends, he replied, “It’s scary. After this, it's going to be weird, not having my day and my schedule fixed around one thing ... all that free time.”

While he is thinking about his plans for after graduation, right now the primary focus week to week is the next game. While Kispert notes the importance of being concerned about every upcoming game, one he is particularly looking forward to will be played Nov. 12 at Harvard.

Penn dropped last weekend's matchup against Brown, playing through absurd weather conditions, and ending an Ivy League winning streak that had stretched back to 2008. This Saturday, the Quakers will celebrate Homecoming and host Princeton at Franklin Field at 1 pm. Penn is the current two-time champion of the Ivy League.

His parents and two twin sisters still reside in Gloucester Township. Kispert said he often goes back and visits, and he is still very close with his friends from high school.

“It was a family atmosphere there, and that’s what is important to me,” he said.
