Erial Elementary Student Killed in Philadelphia Crash

A Miami man has been charged with DWI in connection with Sunday's fatal crash in South Philadelphia.

A fifth-grade student at Erial Elementary School was killed in South Philadelphia this weekend when an allegedly drunken driver crashed into an SUV, which then struck the girl's family.

Samantha Nguyen-Ortanez, 11, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred on the 1100 block of South 8th Street, near Washington Avenue, at around 12:30 p.m. Sunday, according to a report on NBC10.com.

Nguyen-Ortanez was walking out of Captain Jesse's Seafood with her stepmother and stepbrother when 28-year-old Max Drosi, of Miami, FL, ran a red light and crashed his 2012 Chevrolet Impala into a 2003 Nissan SUV, which in turn lost control and struck the three pedestrians before crashing into the seafood store, police told NBC10.

Drosi was under the influence of an intoxicant at the time of the crash, police told NBC10. He has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault while driving intoxicated and homicide, homicide while driving under the influence, and reckless endangerment, according to CBSPhilly.com.

Police also reported that Drosi was looking down at his GPS when he ran the red light near the city's Italian Market.
