Frustration Mounts as Investigation Into Carol Reiff's Death Continues

Camden County Prosecutor Warren W. Faulk and Gloucester Township Police Chief Harry Earle assured friends and family members of a woman whose body was found last year that the investigation into her death is continuing.

However, they admitted there is a certain amount of frustration building concerning the investigation into the death of Carol Reiff, whose body was found near her Lakeview Apartments home in Gloucester Township on June 24, 2013.

About 30 officers from both the Gloucester Township Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Office canvased the area in which she was found on Monday.

They said the time was right to search the scene once more, as the overgrown shrubbery and plant life of the summer is gone and they were able to search for more clues.

“Her death has not been ruled a homicide, but there are certain aspects of the case that make it suspicious enough to investigate as a homicide,” Faulk said at a press conference held at the apartment complex Monday afternoon. “Where the body was found in the shrubbery, it appears as if it was being concealed.”

Reiff, 59, last spoke to her family on June 20, 2013, one day before she planned to visit family members in Manahawkin.

She never arrived, and the family contacted police. Her body was discovered in a wooded area behind her apartment complex on June 24, 2013.

She was single and worked at an insurance company.

A $20,000 reward has been offered for any information related to her death, with $10,000 being offered for information and an additional $10,000 if the information leads to a conviction.

“If anyone heard or saw anything, please let us know, no matter what it is,” Faulk said. “Let us factor it in to our investigation.”

Reiff’s sister approached law enforcement officials during the investigation, but when asked about any information she may have provided on Monday, Faulk reiterated the frustration the family and the investigators feel.

“A family has been uncertain about the fate of their loved one for (nine) months, and we’re trying to clear that uncertainty,” Faulk said. “ … We don’t have enough evidence to determine if it was a homicide, or if it is, to focus on a suspect. We’re trying to keep the investigation active.”

On Monday, investigators posted electronic signs reminding residents of the death and the reward associated with the investigation. Officers also went door-to-door, and at least one resident answered they thought the mystery had already been solved.

Reiff was an avid jogger and neighbors said they often saw her running at all hours of the day. Investigators believe she had been out for a jog earlier in the day before returning home. However, no details of what happened that day are 100 percent clear.

Investigators were set to continue to search the area throughout the day.
