Gang Leader Charged in Drug Trafficking Ring in Camden

An alleged gang leader was charged in an illegal drug trafficking operation that included distribution of a substance containing heroin, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced on Friday.

Special agents of the Drug Enforcement Administration Camden High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Task Force apprehended Tyrone Tyson, 38, in Camden Friday morning, Fishman said. He was charged with knowingly and intentionally distributing, and possessing with the intent to distribute, 100 grams or more of a mixture or substance containing heroin, Fishman said.

Tyson was scheduled to appear in court on Friday afternoon.

 HIDTA began investigating Tyson in late July, and allegedly discovered he was selling heroin in the area of North 32nd Street in Camden, according to the complaint unsealed on Friday.

The investigation included the purchase of heroin from Tyson by undercover officers on two occasions, surveillance, confidential informants and audio recordings, according to the complaint.

The Fruit Town Brims set of the Bloods street gang Tyson allegedly leads controls the gang’s activities in the state, Fishman said.

If convicted, Tyson faces between five and 40 years in prison and a $5 million fine, Fishman said.
