Gloucester Township Man Charged After Allegedly Ordering Dog to Attack Cop

Joseph Remar, 22, was charged with theft of services, aggravated assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.

A Gloucester Township man was arrested after ordering his dog to attack a police officer, causing significant injury to the officer's hand, Gloucester Township Police announced Monday afternoon.

Joseph Remar, 22, was charged with theft of services, aggravated assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.

Remar was one of three people who reportedly allegedly left Teppanyaki Grill and Restaurant, located at 1419 Blackwood-Clementon Road in Gloucester Township, without paying their bill on July 17.

The other two suspects were apprehended immediately. Officers were able to determine Remar had fled to an acquaintance's home on Millbridge Road.

Officers visited the home, and while engaged in a conversation with the resident, Remar allegedly opened a door and gave an attack command to a dog.

The dog allegedly attacked the officer and bit his hand, resulting in serious injury. The dog was subdued in the basement of the home while Remar escaped.

The officer was hospitalized, treated and released.

During a follow-up investigation, officers determined Remar was staying at the Pike Motel in Williamstown.

Gloucester Township and Mantua Township Police obtained a search warrant and found Remar in an upstairs room at the Pike Motel.

He initially refused instructions from the police officers and a brief struggle ensued.

Police said they had to use an unidentified chemical agent to gain compliance from Remar, who was taken into custody without further incident.

Remar was remanded to the Camden County Correctional Facility on $25,000 full cash bail. Additional charges were signed against the suspect in Monroe Township.
