The Gloucester Township Police Department is joining a national initiative that targets distracted drivers.

The High Visibility Law Enforcement Initiative cracks down on distracted drivers, including those who are talking on hand held cellphones and texting while driving. The initiative takes place from April 1-21.

"Distracted driving is a serious issue on our roadways," Acting Director of the New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety Gary Poedubicky said.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that thousands of people are killed and nearly half a million people are injured in distracted driving related crashes each year.

Talking on a hand held cellphone and texting while driving is illegal in New Jersey. However, 72 percent of respondents in a 2013 Fairleigh Dickinson University Public Mind Poll survey conducted for the Division of Highway Traffic Safety said they very often see people driving while talking on a hand held cellphone. Additionally, 40 percent said they very often see drivers texting.

April is National Distracted Driving Month. The High Visibility Law Enforcement Initiative is modeled after similar campaigns, including "Click it or Ticket" and "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over."

This campaign's motto is "UDrive, UText, UPay."

It's way more dangerous than driving without a seatbelt. So instead of those annoying seatbelt stops with half the police force there, this makes more sense. And yes you are alllowed to ticket tailgaters. The Township could bring in millions $$$$.

I wish the pothole people that they hire around here had a clue. They tied up traffic on College Drive the other day. They tried to fix some, but not all of them. Several became raised bumps to go along with the bumps they put in a few years ago (no they don't flatten out). So now we have potholes and bumps. It would be a safer drive if we could look ahead and not down at the road to avoid the potholes.
