Gloucester Township Police to Increase Patrols for St. Patrick's Day

Patrols will increase between Friday and Monday, police said.

The Gloucester Township Police Department will be conducting DWI saturation patrols over the Saint Patrick’s Day weekend, beginning Friday and running through Monday.

These patrols will target Gloucester Township roads that have shown to have a higher number of DWI arrest and motor vehicle crashes.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that alcohol impaired motor vehicle crashes cost an estimated $37 billion dollars annually.

Additionally, in 2012, more than 10,000 people died in alcohol impaired motor vehicle crashes. The New Jersey State Police reported that in 2012, alcohol and/or drug  impairment was a factor in 145 fatal motor vehicle crashes.

Police advise residents to do one of the following:

* if you plan to drive, don’t  drink;

* choose a sober designated driver before partying; or

* take mass transit or a taxi.
