Gloucester Township Police Traffic Safety Tip: No Turn on Red

The tip is part of their ongoing series of traffic tips.

The Gloucester Township Police Department issued the following tip as part of its ongoing traffic safety tips of the month:

Right Turn on Red

Unless a “No Turn on Red” sign is posted, New Jersey law 39:4-115, authorizes a right turn on a red light after a motorist comes to a full stop and checks for traffic. A motorist must yield to all oncoming traffic and pedestrians before turning right at a red light.  Difficult to see vehicles, such as bicycles and mopeds, may have a green light, so it is important for a motorist to be aware of their presence. Always use a proper turn signal at least 100 feet before making any turn and cancel the signal after completing the turn.

Additional information can also be found at www.njmvc.gov or by contacting the Gloucester Township Police Traffic Services Bureau at 856-374-5715 or by email at police@gtpolice.com.

My pet peeve on no turn on red sgns: Too many times we will be stopped at a red light and wonder if there was a sign 10 or 20 feet back (sometimes there was). So why not put the sign where you will see it when you are stopped?
