GTPD Officer Narrowly Escapes Injury

Ptl. Anthony Massi's cruiser gets hit by a vehicle allegedly operated by a drunken driver as he's sitting in it on the side of Sicklerville Road.

A Gloucester Township police officer was lucky to escape unscathed from a car accident involving an allegedly drunken driver Wednesday evening in the township's Sicklerville section.

The accident occurred at about 5:12 p.m. on Sicklerville Road, near Jarvis Road.

Ptl. Anthony Massi was sitting in his police cruiser on the side of the road, with the vehicle's emergency warning lights activated, while conducting an investigation. An SUV side-swiped the police vehicle before coming to a stop a short distance down the road.

Police approached the vehicle and found its driver, 42-year-old Arnold J. Lyles, to be "very intoxicated," Deputy Chief David Harkins said.

Lyles, of Loch Lomond Drive, in Sicklerville, was arrested for driving while intoxicated. He was processed and released on his own recognizance.
