Man Charged With Assaulting Gloucester Township Cop, Heroin Possession

Michael Thomas, 58, of Atlantic City, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

A Gloucester Township Police Officer was injured during a fight with a hitchhiker who was in possession of heroin and was wanted on an outstanding warrant for a traffic incident.

Michael Thomas, 58, of Atlantic City, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled dangerous substance, police announced Friday morning.

Police responded to a call of a man hitchhiking on Sicklerville Road at 5:17 Thursday evening. The officer located Thomas in the area of Villari's Lakeside Inn.

During the interview, the officer discovered Thomas was wanted on an outstanding warrant for his arrest stemming from a traffic offense.

Thomas resisted arrest, stating that he was not going back to jail. He ran off, discarding several packets of heroin along the way.

The officer pursued, and a violent struggle ensued. The officer injured his hand during the fight. Additional officers arrived on the scene and took Thomas into custody.

The injured officer was treated at a nearby hospital for the injury and later released pending further medical evaluation.

Thomas was was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment before being charged. He was remanded to Camden County Jail in default of $35,000/10% bail.
