Man Charged with Setting Mom's Car on Fire

Police ruled the Feb. 28 blaze an arson, then charged the victim's son with the crime.

Police have charged a Blackwood man with setting fire to his mother's car near his Little Gloucester Road apartment.

The fire occurred on University Court on Feb. 28.

Police and the Camden County fire marshal identified the car fire as an arson after determining the blaze was set using an accelerant.

During the arson probe, investigators learned the car had been reported stolen in Florida about an hour after it was found on fire.

Police contacted the car's owner, an elderly woman who reported that she had the car towed to Florida following her recent move there.

Police also learned the car owner's son lived at Autumn Ridge Apartments, near where the car was found ablaze.

Andre Gainey, 42, was brought in for questioning and charged Thursday with arson. He was released on his own recognizance on a criminal summons.

Gainey allegedly set the car on fire using kerosene due to its many mechanical issues.

Police did not identify the car by make or model in a press release issued to announce Gainey's arrest.
