Gloucester Township police Sgt. James Garber returned home to a hero's welcome Sunday afternoon.
Garber, along with Sgt. Kevin Thyne and Ptl. Ruth Burns, was shot when 39-year-old Willingboro resident Eddie Jones III attacked and disarmed Burns while Jones was being processing on a stalking charge at police headquarters early Friday morning. Jones fired multiple times at the officers before being fatally shot by Garber and Thyne.
Garber, a 13-year veteran, was the most seriously injured of the three officers, sustaining a gunshot wound to his stomach that required surgery. He was released Sunday afternoon from Cooper University Hospital in Camden, and returned to his township home.
Thyne was shot in his duty belt, causing a laceration to his stomach, and sustained a graze wound to his chin in the incident. Burns was shot in her foot. Both officers were released from the hospital Friday.
On Sunday, Garber was greeted at his home by fellow officers, Boy Scout Troop 811, members of the Warriors' Watch organization and local fire and EMS personnel.
