Police: Shoplifter's Decision to Confront Customers Brings Robbery Charge

Police say a Sicklerville teen got into an altercation at a Wawa with customers he believed were writing down his car's license plate number.

An 18-year-old Sicklerville man is facing a robbery charge, police say, after he got into an altercation with fellow Wawa customers he believed were attempting to help the store report his alleged shoplifting to authorities.

Gloucester Township Police were summoned to the Wawa at 2700 Sicklerville Road, in Erial, at 12:04 p.m. Thursday for a report of a disturbance in the parking lot, according to Sgt. Kevin Thyne.

The responding officers were told by witnesses that a customer who had fled the store just prior to their arrival got into an altercation with fellow customers he felt were writing down his car's license plate number.

Wawa employees had confronted the suspect after allegedly spotting him concealing items in the store. Before exiting the Sicklerville Road store, the suspect reportedly threatened to assault the employees if they called police on him.

Police stopped the suspect's vehicle a short distance from the store, according to Thyne.

Rayshawn Cannon, of Arrowwood Drive, was charged with one count of second-degree robbery. He was lodged in Camden County Jail on $50,000 bail.
