Township Man Charged with DWI Following Accident

The accident occurred at College Drive and Blackwood Clementon Road Wednesday afternoon.

A 50-year-old township man was drunk when he crashed his car into the back of another at College Drive and Blackwood Clementon Road Wednesday afternoon, according to police.

Gloucester Township Police were dispatched to the accident scene at 3:47 p.m. Wednesday. It was reported the driver of the striking vehicle was attempting to leave the scene.

Arriving police units were able to stop the striking vehicle as its driver attempted to flee the scene, according to Sgt. James Garber.

The striking vehicle's driver, identified by police as Winding Way resident Thomas A. Hayes, was arrested for driving while intoxicated. Police also charged Hayes with fourth-degree assault by auto and issued him a traffic summons for reckless driving.

Police investigating the accident believe the Clementon man drove his vehicle into the back of the other vehicle as its driver attempted to stop for traffic.

Police did not identify the driver and passenger of the other vehicle. They were taken to a local hospital after complaining of back and neck pain, but were expected to be released after being treated, Garber said.

Hayes was released on his own recognizance.
