School Safety and Security Conference Set for Aug. 13 in Gloucester County

The event is sponsored by the prosecutor's offices of Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.

The eighth annual School Safety and Security Conference, cosponsored by seven South Jersey county prosecutor’s offices takes place on Aug. 13 at the TD bank Performing Arts Center of Washington Township High School, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the prosecutor’s offices of Atlantic, Burlington,  Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester and Salem counties.

At the event, speakers will share their knowledge of drug abuse among students, threat assessments for schools and how to conduct “reunification” of students and parents in the aftermath of a catastrophic event at a school.

Colorado resident John-Michael Keyes will discuss protocol for reunification. Michael-Keyes, a speaker at the 2013 safety and security conference, became a spokesman nationwide for better emergency response in schools after his 16-year-old daughter was fatally shot in a 2006 high school hostage incident.

“School safety and drug safety transcend all borders,”  Gloucester County Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton said.  “This conference will bring educators, law enforcement and residents from all over South Jersey together to learn about the best approaches to these important issues.”

Douglas Collier, drug initiative coordinator and law enforcement liason for the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, will discuss “Heroin and Prescription Drug Awareness.”

In “Pragmatic Threat Assessments,” John McDonald, executive director of emergency management for the Jeffco Public Schools in Lakewood CO,   will discuss how to evaluate school security preparations.
