Social Media Helps Police Nab Accused Shoplifter

An anonymous caller contacted Gloucester Township Police with information on an alleged shoplifter.

Social media outreach has helped arrest a shoplifting suspect accused of stealing items from Rite Aid.

Police put out a bulletin asking for the public's help in identifying an unknown man suspected of fleeing from Rite Aid on Blackwood Clementon Road on Nov. 2. Gloucester Township Patch on Wednesday. 

An anonymous tipster fingered Kelly Dunn, 26, of Pine Hill. Officers questioned Dunn and charged him with shoplifting. Dunn was released pending a court appearance.

Gloucester Township Police increasingly use social media to seek the public's help to identify suspects. The department regularly releases videos and still pictures via the department's Facebook and YouTube pages. 

The outreach apparently pays off.

"This marks Gloucester Township Police Department's fifth successful investigation via social media," reads a release from the department. "The Gloucester Township Police Department routinely encourages community involvement for without their support these specific crimes would go unsolved."
