Township Police Introduce Anonymous Text Crime-Tip Service

Residents now have multiple ways to alert Gloucester Township Police about crime.

Passing on a tip to township police is now no harder than texting a friend.

The department announced a new service that allows residents to text crime tips to them anonymously by mobile phone.

The service, Citizen Observers tip411, enables a person to send a text message to 847411, keyword GLOTWP. The message will not identify the texter. Residents can also visit the tip411 webpage and send an anonymous email.

With both text messages and anonymous emails, the only identifier police receive is an unidentifiable tracking number. The person sending a text message receives a message back to call 911 if their situation is an emergency.

Township police credit their Crime Stopper program of sending emails and posting videos on social media, such as Facebook, with a 65 percent clearance rate for incidents publicized in this way.
