Camden County Mirrors State in Special Primary

Camden County was a near match for the statewide results in the special U.S. Senate primary Tuesday night, with Cory Booker and Steve Lonegan both winning landslides in the county, according to unofficial results.

Lonegan scored an 80-20 split with Alieta Eck statewide, and did a hair better in winning Camden County with an 81.9—17.2 margin, taking 2,429 votes on the Republican side.

Booker, who made several visits in the weeks leading up to the election, including in Cherry Hill and Collingswood, did better than his statewide polling in the county. The Newark mayor grabbed 69.59 percent of the Democratic vote in Camden County, as opposed to roughly 60 percent statewide.

The other three Democrats—Frank Pallone Jr., Rush Holt and Sheila Oliver—all polled below their statewide totals, with Holt taking the biggest hit, drawing only 10.33 percent in Camden County, as opposed to 17 percent statewide.

A total of just under 19,000 voters came out for both the Democratic and Republican races in the county, with the more-contested Democratic race drawing more than five times the number of voters.

Still, turnout didn't even hit 12 percent for either side in the county—just 11.75 percent of Democrats cast a ballot, while 6.95 percent of Republicans turned out to the polls.
