Freighter "Arrested" After Delivering 110,000 Cartons of Mushy Bananas to Gloucester City

The Green Brazil made the delivery from Guatemala to Gloucester City on Monday. It will not be permitted to leave until a judge gives approval.

They’re not crying over spilled milk, but they are suing over rotten bananas.

Del Monte Fresh Produce has filed a federal lawsuit for $1.5 million over nearly 110,000 cartons of bananas they say went mushy during a four-day delivery by sea, the Courier Post reports.

The delivery was made by the Green Brazil, a refrigerated freighter that delivered the bananas from Guatemala to Gloucester City, according to the report.

It docked on Monday and has been placed under arrest, meaning it will need a judge’s approval before it can leave, according to the report.

The suit was filed on Thursday. It seeks compensation from firms from multiple countries that own and operate the freighter, according to the report.

An additional 170,000 cartons of bananas and melons made the trip safely. The mushy bananas all came from two holds on the freighter, according to the report.
