GEMS Solar Project a Go

With approvals in place, now Council must find a private developer for the landfill redevelopment.

Gloucester Township will move ahead with a solar project at a town landfill after Council approved a redevelopment plan with little fanfare Monday.

The town plans to install solar panels at the Gloucester Environmental Management Services (GEMS) landfill site. Council unanimously approved an ordinance on second reading to adopt a redevelopment plan for the site. Councilwoman Michelle Gentek was absent from the meeting and did not vote. No one from the public spoke on the measure.

Mayor David Mayer earlier thanked Council for its consideration of the redevelopment plan, something he said will fit into Gloucester Township’s focus on solar energy sources.

With the measure approved, Gloucester Township will now find a private developer to execute the plan. There was no discussion on candidates at Monday’s meeting.

The ordinance (click on the PDF, right, to view) retains Gloucester Township as the redevelopment entity, which oversees the plan’s implementation. The town will lease or sell the land to the private developer to carry out the project.
