Gloucester Twp. Council Advances Little League Complex, Rec Center Bond Ordinance

The $920,000 bond ordinance would result in improvements to a Little League complex and the township Recreation Center.

The Township Council on Monday unanimously approved a bond ordinance on first reading that, if approved later this month, would result in improvements to the complex and the Broadacres Drive Recreation Center.

The $920,000 bond ordinance would result in $687,900 in improvements to the township-owned Little League clubhouse and complex and $287,100 in improvements to the Recreation Center.

The bulk of the improvements to the Blackwood Kiwanis Little League clubhouse would be to the building's foundation, septic system and roof, according to the ordinance. There also would be work done on the complex's drainage system.

Council Vice President Orlando Mercado, who along with Councilman Frank Schmidt abstained from the roll call vote due to his connection to the Little League organization, asked residents to remember the improvements aren't just about a building.

"Sometimes when we see this dollar amount that we put on a bond ordinance, it's just not for a physical building or grading or drainage," he said. "It's about supporting 800 kids and families that are involved with Blackwood Kiwanis."

The remaining $287,100 would cover an expansion of the Recreation Center.

The bond issuances would require a $46,000 down payment.

The bonds would be paid off over 20 years, according to the ordinance.
