Lower Speed Limit Coming to Cross Keys Road?

The Township Council is expected to consider a measure put forth by the police chief at its meeting later this month.

Motorists may soon have to slow down a bit traveling along Berlin-Cross Keys Road.

Gloucester Township Police Chief W. Harry Earle put forth a proposal to reduce the speed limit along Berlin-Cross Keys Road in the township from 50 mph to 45 mph during the Township Council's work session Monday night.

"As you know there's been a considerable amount of construction and change out on Berlin-Cross Keys Road," Earle said. "Actually, in Gloucester County, they've lowered theirs to 45, just as we desire to do here."

Earle told Council the reduction was deemed appropriate following a study conducted by the township's engineering consulting firm, Remington & Vernick.

If Council approves the proposed speed-limit reduction, the state Department of Transportation would have to sign off on the plan before the change would be implemented, Earle noted.

Council is expected to take action on the proposed speed-limit change at its Dec. 28 meeting.

The speed-limit reduction would also be implemented along that portion of Winslow Township's Berlin-Cross Keys Road—the northbound lanes on the roadway's east side—that runs parallel to Gloucester Township's portion—the southbound lanes on the west side—Gloucester Township Police Capt. Jeffrey Weiserth said Tuesday.
