Police, Public Works Promote Pedestrian Pathways

Six new pedestrian crosswalks were added across the township last week.

Police and public works personnel installed six pedestrian-crossing signs at three points last week to alert motorists to upcoming crosswalks.

The signs were installed on Blackwood's Almonsesson Road, West Church Street and Lakeland Road where the township bicycle and walking path crosses each roadway.

The reflective, in-street, high-visibility signs are used to remind drivers of New Jersey's relatively new right-of-way law at pedestrian crossings.

"Casey's Law," which the Legislature passed last April, requires motorists to come to a complete stop and remain stopped for pedestrians in crosswalks, as well as for pedestrians crossing at intersections where there are no marked crosswalks.

Motorists who fail to stop for pedestrians face fines of $200 and as many as two penalty points on their driver's licenses.

"Casey's Law," named after 21-year-old Casey Feldman, who was struck and killed in Ocean City in July 2009, was the first change to New Jersey traffic law regarding pedestrians in more than 50 years. Feldman's death was among more than 150 pedestrian fatalities statewide in 2009.

In addition to the six new signs to promote pedestrian safety, the New Jersey Department of Transportation has installed a new crosswalk on the Black Horse Pike at Central Avenue.

This crosswalk aims to allow pedestrians to safely cross the Black Horse Pike in the area of the Gloucester Township-Blackwood Rotary Public Library, as well as the adjacent area where township events are frequently held.

Pedestrians are reminded to still use due caution when crossing in the marked crosswalks. For additional information on pedestrian safety and the laws governing it, click here.
