Author Shares Pain Caused by Underage Drinking

Toren Volkmann, who co-wrote "From Binge to Blackout: A Mother and Son Struggle with Teen Drinking" with his mother, spoke about the dangers of teen drinking last week at Timber Creek High.

Toren Volkmann, co-author of From Binge to Blackout: A Mother and Son Struggle with Teen Drinking, spoke about underage drinking and alcoholism with parents and students at Timber Creek Regional High School Thursday night.

Student-assistance coordinators from Black Horse Pike Regional School District and Gloucester Township Public Schools organized the event, dubbed From Drinking for Fun to Dependence: A Personal Odyssey.

Volkmann co-wrote From Binge to Blackout with his mother, Chris Volkmann. The book is about the young man's struggle with teen drinking and the impact it had on his parents, especially his mother.

Volkmann graduated from college with a bachelor's degree in psychology, then joined the Peace Corps.

He told the crowd at Timber Creek he didn't think he had a drinking problem because of his achievements. It was during his volunteer work in Paraguay that he realized he was an alcoholic.

Volkmann lives in Portland, OR, and has been sober for seven years.
