BHPRSD Sports: Week in Review and Look Ahead

The Timber Creek boys' track team won its division at the Woodbury Relays, while Highland baseball got back on track.

It was a big week for the Timber Creek boys’ track team, which won its division at the Woodbury Relays on Saturday. Last week also saw Highland baseball continue to surge and Triton softball win a pair of extra-inning battles.

Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule.

BOYS’ TRACK

Timber Creek got dominant efforts all over the track as it earned a Division 3 title at the Woodbury Relays Saturday. The 4x200 team of Kevin Potter, Nakier Johnson, Andrew Brown and Greg Black took first place.

Meanwhile, the Chargers' 4x100, 4x400 and 4x100 shuttle relay teams each placed second.

In the field Josh Gray was second in the triple jump, Brandon Grayson took third in the high jump and Quanzell Lambert took third in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

Highland was seventh in Division 3 thanks to a first-place finish by the 4x800 relay team of Jameer Roberts, Steve Maine, Tim Alicea and Cory Constantine.

GIRLS’ TRACK

The Chargers produced a fourth-place finish in Division 3 at the Woodbury Relays. The team’s best performance came in the 4x100 where the foursome of Alicia Terrell, Sierra Anderson, Paige Furlow and Alexis Brown took second place.

Terrell also had a big day in the field, taking second in the high jump. The Chargers’ Kelsey Kohlepp was fifth in the discus, while Triton’s Whitmire was eighth in the pole vault.

SOFTBALL

Cherry Hill West was able to take Triton into extra innings, but it couldn’t prevent the Mustangs’ offense from running wild. Triton scored eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull away for a 12-4 victory. Dez Martinez came through with a big effort, notching three hits and five RBIs. Three of the RBIs came in the decisive eighth inning.

Later in the week it took Triton until the ninth inning to put away a conference opponent. Stephanie Josepayt had three hits, including a two-RBI double in the ninth, to power the Mustangs past Cherokee, 5-1. Brielle Reighn also had three hits, while striking out five over nine innings on the mound.

Timber Creek snapped a four-game slide with a 7-6 win over Bishop Eustace. The Chargers trailed 6-4 entering the seventh, but Brianna Milillo had a two-run double to tie the game and Mady Zoranski plated her with a go-ahead single. Ashley Siegman was 4-for-4 in the win.

Earlier in the week the Chargers scored , but fell short against Paul VI.

Highland went 0-3 on the week, but has been getting solid defensive play from sophomore .

BASEBALL

Highland continued to turn its fortunes around, going 2-1 on the week with wins over Penns Grove and Gloucester. Highland wasted no time flexing its muscles against Penns Grove, scoring 10 runs in the first inning of a 16-1 win. Highland then bounced back from a 5-4 loss to Gloucester Catholic, to down the Lions by a score of 6-2. Frank Angeloni had three hits and scored three runs, while Matt Miniconzi had two RBIs and a run.

Sixteen was a lucky number for Triton, which defeated Cherry Hill West, 16-11, and Palmyra, 16-4. John DeLuca blasted a homer against Palmyra is the consolation game of the Hammonton Tournament.

Timber Creek snapped a six-game slide with a 10-8 win over Cherry Hill West. Danny Williams got the win as the Chargers held on after West scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh.

BOYS' TENNIS

Timber Creek improved to 6-1 with a 3-0 week. The Chargers scored wins over Paul VI, Camden and Shawnee. Diondre Hartwell and Justin Quigley went undefeated at singles, while the doubles team of Devin Eager/Mike Strauch also swept the week.

Highland managed its first win of the season on Friday when the Tartans defeated Deptford, 4-1. No 2 singles Eddie Olmo and No. 3 singles Jonathan Kennedy both won in straight sets. Triton also won its first match of the year, 5-0, over Camden.

GOLF

Highland picked up its third win of the season in a 167-183 victory over Deptford. The Tartans also dropped matches to Kingsway and Delsea.

Timber Creek earned its second win of the year, a 180-194 decision over Haddon Heights. Triton also scored its second win, a 181-213 victory over Camden Catholic.

THIS WEEK

- The Highland baseball team will look to stay hot when it hosts Cumberland on Tuesday and GCIT on Thursday.

- The Timber Creek boys’ track team will go up against the best in the tri-state area Friday at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.

- The Timber Creek boys’ tennis team looks to take a step closer to a division crown on Wednesday when it faces Winslow Township. The Chargers face district rival Triton on Friday.

- The Triton softball team hosts Cherry Hill West Wednesday in an Olympic Conference clash.
